Cook County Judge Found Not Guilty by Insanity in Battery Case
Judge Cynthia Brim, who has a long history of mental illness, was found not guilty at her Monday misdemeanor battery trial, according to a Sun-Times Media report.
Cook County Judge Cynthia Brim was found not guilty Monday by reason of insanity after a misdemeanor battery trial, the Sun-Times Media reports.
Judge Brim was in court for shoving a Sheriff’s deputy back in March after he asked her why she decided to throw her keys at a security checkpoint at the Daley Center, according to the report. She was dressed in hospital scrubs and a fur coat at the time of the confrontation, and allegedly off her medications.
Brim has a history of bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder that predates her move up to the bench in 1994, the Sun-Times reports, and she’s been hospitalized five times since 1993 for psychotic episodes.
Nonetheless, Brim won re-election for her $182,000 yearly position last November in spite of consistently low marks from local bar associations.

Well, let's hope Cook County Judge Cynthia Brim is not re-elected should she still be around to run again. There are some jobs that mentally ill people should not hold. Judge is one of them. Meds or no meds.

I remember voting AGAINST her retention. I'm sorry that she has issues and hope that she is able to resolve them. In Crook County this is the voter mentality:

In Cook County NO ONE gets elected to a Judgeship without being supported by Mike Madigan and the Cook Dem party. I had a Dem friend who was an exceptional lawyer run in the Primary, but he couldn't overcome his opponent having 500 people (payrollers) distributing campaign materials and spending $100K to his $20K in the campaign.
Someone in the dem slating committee should be made to answer how they got her elected and why they selected her over MANY highly qualified judicial candidates.
Anyone know the process for having a judge removed from office for being incompetent and crazy?

Well it makes perfect sense. You have already invested in 4 years of college and three years of law school but the mental illness makes you effectively unemployable as a lawyer. So, do what incompetents have done around here for generations: brown-nose some political sponsor and get a County job! Life tenure nearly guaranteed!

Shouldn't all cases that she has presided over be overturned then as she has been insane since she was diagnosed. Or did her insanity only begin with ther battery of another individual.

I also voted AGAINST her retention. Unlike many voters in D2 I actually took the time BEFORE the election and did RESEARCH on the judges. As I recall there were 3-4 that needed to GO.
We now see the new way to excuse poor work performance, extended absence (and still get paid) or aggressive behavior. Get diagnosed as bipolar.

If a judge is voted out, they still get appointed, despite the wishes of the public. Happens all the time. Separation of powers is no more.
