Really Patch?! An old man dies of natural causes and you want to sensationalize it? Isn't there enough bad news out there, this is sad for his family and loved ones without you making it "breaking news".

This is not sensationalizing. He was found in the snow, which may suggest shoveling related heart attack, which is newsworthy because those who are not at high risk for shoveling related heart attacks should be helping their neighbors who are at risk. It makes my blood boil to see able-bodied neighbors shovel their walks and only their walks while their next door neighbor is obviously not able-bodied for shoveling. (Non-violent does not necessarily mean natural causes.)

I lived in a neighborhood where the "able bodied" man next door would say nasty things to anyone who would listen about their neighbor who did not get out to shovel, never mind that she was rushed to the hospital at least once a year with breathing issues.

Take care of your neighbors, you never know when you may trade places with them!

Good one SS. And even if we never trade places with out neighbor, being a good neighbor (helping out) is just the human thing to do.

June, I live in a neighborhood where the lawn police get called if you let it go (which I did when I tweaked my back one summer).

It takes all kinds, eh?

Dinkum: Instead of calling the lawn police, neighbors should ask if you need assistance. I've offered many times to pull weeds for my neighbors. They get the hint, without a nasty Violation fee. (I hope your back is much better.)

Thanks SS. If you pull my weeds this summer, the ice tea or adult beverage is on me. :-)

Back is better, thank you.

I shoveled my elderly neighbor's walk when I was younger and lived with my mom. Then I shoveled my neighbor's walk when I moved, and he got sick. I shoveled it after he passed away to help out his family, and I shovel it now on occassion to help out our new neighbors because they both work and just had a baby. If I can help, so can everybody else. You should be ashamed if you don't.

I agree with patch posting this story to heighten awareness for those who need help in bad weather. There's no reason someone at risk should die in the snow while shoveling if there are able bodied neighbors in the area.

I live in Southgate and there are always people on our block shoveling and mowing and doing other tasks to help the neighbors. It's a great neighborhood. Which makes it extra sad that this happened here. Ryan, please update us if you get more information.

I used to live in Southgate and the neighbors were wonderful about helping me with shoveling when my kids were young and my husband was often out of town on business. It is indeed a great neighborhood.
