Video Gambling in Homewood?: On the Agenda

A preview of what's going to be discussed and voted on during Homewood's Aug. 14 village board meeting.

Homewood Village President Richard Hofeld and the village trustees will meet at Homewood Village Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

New Village Manger Swearing In

Jim Marino will be sworn in as Homewood's new village manager. Marino is taking the place of former Village Manager Ralph DeWitt who resigned due to medical complications.

Honoring 20 Years of Employment

Alexander Muszynski is slated on the agenda to be recognized for 20 years of service to the Village of Homewood as a public works employee.

Board Meeting Date Changed

Homewood's scheduled Tuesday, September 25 village board meeting will be changed to Monday, September 24, 2012.

State Approved Gaming

The trustees will be voting on whether Homewood should be allowed to permit "state approved gaming." While Illinois approved this statewide some years ago, local governments are still left with ultimate discretion on whether or not to allow (what essentially amounts to) video gambling. Several Homewood businesses have been requesting the village amend this ordinance, including two prominent bars and at least one downtown restaurant, according to Trustee Anne Colton. She also said this is an issue that local businesses have addressed to the board several times already.

On the video gambling issue, is this something that can be limited? Perhaps with special licenses?

Go to Las Vegas and gamble. It's a lot more fun and they have a much nicer winter than we do!

I will NEVER vote for ANY trustee who supports video gambling WEST of Halsted. There are vacant spaces behind Target - you recall? The ones you denied to the cemetery willing to pay CASH? THAT's where they should be if ANYWHERE in Homewood.

What about all that cash we were supposed to get through the OTR that was shoved down our throats? How did that work out? This won't work out any better. This will be bad for residents in both the short run and the long run.

Every time someone moves the line over, just a bit - a little bit can't hurt, right? - they sacrifice the village's identity as an outstanding community. Don't steer us further down the path of mediocrity. Please.
