Supposed Groupon Source of Restaurant Dispute, Crab Leg Credit: Homewood Police Blotter

Homewood police reports, Jan. 11-15

SUNDAY, JAN. 15

Disputed Restaurant Bill

Kevin Mallette, 53, of the 800 block of Pin Oak Lane in University Park, was charged with theft. Police said Mallette was arrested at a restaurant in the 18000 block of Martin Avenue around 8 p.m. for refusing to pay his $203 bill. He told arresting officers the contention was over a Groupon deal, which the restaurant was refusing to honor.

Credit for Crab Legs

A juvenile was arrested running out of a grocery store in the 17700 block of Halsted Street around 6:15 p.m. and charged with retail theft. Police said he asked the store’s butcher to wrap up $45 worth of crab legs, then placed the package in the middle of an aisle and left the store. He returned minutes later, picked up the package and tried returning it at the customer service desk, according to the report.

SATURDAY, JAN. 14

Stolen Louis Vuiton Wallet

A complaint was signed against a man accused of stealing a woman’s $800 Louis Vuiton wallet and iPhone in December. Police said the owner’s old iPhone has an application that can track the stolen one, showing its text messages and phone calls, as well as the name of the new account holder using the stolen phone. No arrest had been reported as of Tuesday morning.

THURSDAY, JAN. 12

Employee Caught Stealing

Richard Keen, 21, of the 16300 block of Paulina Street in Markham, was charged with three counts of retail theft. Police were called to a store in the 17600 block of Halsted Street around 3 p.m. about a former employee who had been caught stealing on video camera in December. Police said the footage shows Keen on three separate dates concealing an iPod, Xbox 360 and set of headphones, all totaling $554, from the storage room. According to the report, Keen told police he had sold the items to pay his bills.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 11

Shoplifting, Battery

Delores Davis, 48, of the 3900 block of St. Charles Road in Bellwood, was charged with retail theft and two counts of battery. Security told police that a woman later identified as Davis left a store in the 17500 block of Halsted Street around 4:30 without paying for several items in her purse totaling $120. Police said Davis hid the items in a bush outside the store and when stopped by store security, raised the crutch in her right hand “as if to strike.” The woman then punched the hand of a store security officer who blocked the crutch and pushed him in the chest, according to the report.

Police report information is provided by the Homewood Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Although I don't believe you walk out on a $203 bill, I have a funny feeling this restaurant in the "18000 block of Martin" is Little Tokyo. Every single person I know who has used their Groupon there was given a hard time. They push the Groupons (through Groupon as well as promoting their own discount) and then refuse to honor them. When my fiancee and I (whom the host recognized) walked in the asked us if we had a Groupon (which we did) and then asked us to come back on a less busy night...which to me you is some of the worst customer service/appreciation. Then we gently reminded them how much we support their carry-out business and how much we would easily go over the Groupon amount that evening, in addition to telling them that no, we wouldn't come back that we wanted to actually eat here right there and then...and then we were seated. I can certainly understand the gentleman's frustration with this business - minus the walking out on the entire bill part.

I had the same experience at the Tokyo restuarant with my groupon. The manager/owner was rude, the chef was terrible and the portions were very small. We did not even get what the groupon promised. The chef thought it was funny to spray water at me. It wasn't funny because he stained my shirt. When I called the following day to speak to the owner he was extremely rude. I think there is a lot more to the story of this person trying to walk out on a $230 tab. I would NEVER step foot in that restaurant EVER again. They lost a lot of business!

We've used Groupon at Cilantro twice and never had an issue!

I've used 2 Groupons at Toyko and had no problems at all. You do have to have a reservation to use it - it said that on ours, perhaps not on all? The owner, Bruce, has always been very nice to everyone we've seen him with and the chef Diego is the best hibachi chef I've ever had - and I've gone to a lot of these restaurants!
