Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss; Read Across America Day
How do you plan on celebrating Read Across America Day?
Pick Up a Book, Pass It Around
Celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday March 2 by joining book lovers and your local school and public library for Read Across America day.
One year ago, we hit Flossmoor's Public Library for five book recommendations from librarians. Here's a link to the article if you want to check them out.
This year, the National Education Association, a group of more than 3.2 million educators who work to improve public schools, is calling on book lovers around the nation to take up The Lorax, the popular Dr. Seuss children's book published in 1971 about the lovable creature who fights to save the environment.
Share your plans for celebrating Read Across America Day with Patch or on the Read Across America pledge site. NEA and Lorax' publisher, Random House, also have lesson plans and lots of other materials, resources and printable activities for teachers, parents and kids.

CELEBRATING "READ ACROSS AMERICA"
I am tutoring two kindergarten boys at Jones Community Center in Chicago Heights. They'd like more tutors; contact the director of the after-school program, Ms. Tonnettia Ivie or executive director Ms Cheryl Roop at 757-5395.
My grandson invited me to be a story reader in his Park Ridge 1st grade, so I will go today to read Jack Kent's "Mrs. Mooley". If time permits, also Patricia Polacco's "Mr. Lincoln's Way", Heather Henson's "That Book Woman", Jon Muth's "Zen Ties", Allen Say's "Grandfather's Journey" -- oh, don't get me started, we'll be here all day! District #153 loves "Read Across America" so much that we started celebrating a day early! Yesterday, Willow School kindergartners visited James Hart School where the 7th- and 8th-graders read to the younger students. They also enjoyed some time for snacks and crafts together. (I posted some photos.) This morning, Willow School's much-loved head custodian "Mr. Jerry" read Dr. Seuss' "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" over the school's intercom after morning announcements. I'll post a photo shortly.
