Have you seen any coyotes lurking around town recently? If so, you're among the scores of Patch readers who've already sent in their spotting locations. Now, we're not telling you this to scare you. In fact, according to the Cook County Coyote Project, there hasn't been a documented case of a coyote attacking a human in Illinois since at least 1985—the beginning range of the study. On top of that, there have only been two cases of coyotes killing a human in the U.S. and Canada in modern history.
That said, residents are indeed reporting interactions with local coyotes and we want to keep those numbers from getting any higher. The Cook County Coyote Project website says one of the best ways to prevent coyote conflict is to avoid feeding them, whether that be intentional or not.
Furthermore, coyotes typically come out at night. If you see a coyote during the day, that's indication the animal may be more bold and therefore more likely to attack. If you ever find yourself in this situation, the study recommends you yell, wave your arms and try to throw something at the coyote. Never run away!
While coyotes have been known to attack pets, the Cook County Coyote Project says coyotes do not frequently attack dogs, and when they do, they tend to be smaller dogs. Cats, on the other hand, may represent more alluring targets. Don't lose too much sleep over it, though. The vast majority of a coyote's diet is made up of mice and rats.
If you run into what you think might be considered a "nuisance" coyote, don't hesitate to call Cook County Animal Control at 708-974-6046.

From behind Ravisloe facing north in the Governors Park area I see the coyotes on a daily basis and have even tracked the pack into Ravisloe to see where they den and such. I'm guessing there may be approxmiately 8 to 12 right now with the new litters for the year. Often I see them travel from one specific location to another either looking for food or a mate. I have notice that most golf courses will inhabit a pack and they do interact with each other. We listen for they're howls, each howl is a different communication, similiar to humans using words. They have been here much longer than us and truly deserve to be unditurbed if possible. They tend to hunt in packs, they are more afraid of you than you of them. Ryan is definately correct, if you should come into contact with one or more, you should huff and puff, yell and scream like a crazy person, they will run for the moon.
However, if hungry enough they have been known to try to take a small animal from a leash if so, the same works grap your pet pick it up, this creates a bigger animal in the coyotes eyes, the coyote usually will become very intimidated. This absolutely works well without a doubt, I and my family have encountered many coyotes in many locations other than just Homewood. Don't let your small animals run loose, they will become lunch, especially now that the weather is turning. Coyotes have little reason to attack humans and prefer to avoid us. They are an admirable species and deserve respect.

OK I get all excited about this. I actually LIKE Coyotes and in many ways they have more right here than we do. VERY, unusual for them to attack people. When I lived in CO. several years ago a group or pack , if you will, would be standing around the back edge of the parking lot for our building when I left for work in the morning~~ we humans would say good morning to them and they to us and we'd go our separate ways. I cannot stand how some people exaggerate the threat from them. They might, consider a small dog or cat as prey-- I don't worry because my dog is Medium sized and my 2 cats are indoor kitties~~ If you are SMART you will not let your little dog out on it's own in the early AM or from around dusk on~~~and your cat should be an indoor pet anyway. Coyotes actually prefer to stay away from people---- it is the humans that act stupid not the Coyote.

I've seen lone coyotes in our neighborhood for the past couple of years, usually in the early a.m. hours. This summer, one walked down the sidewalk on our block, crossed the street, and then came through our back yard. I must say he was the most beautiful coyote I've ever seen - not scraggly-looking like they often are.
A few years ago a friend of mine was out with their sweet, adorable Maltese dog, on a leash at about 10:00 p.m., when a coyote darted out from behind some bushes, grabbed the little dog leash and all, and ran off with him. Definitely be very careful with small dogs, even leashed, and keep your cats indoors. Not only are cats a tasty morsel for coyotes, they also eat song birds. One of my neighbor's cats killed an entire nest of cardinals this spring. The poor cardinal parents were very distraught. They continued to revisit the scene of the crime several times a day for weeks. After a while the male quit coming, but the female came and seemed to be looking for her babies on her own for quite a while longer. It was very sad. The cat didn't even eat the babies - just killed them seemingly for sport. Please keep your kitties indoors.

We were turning onto Francisco off of 183rd Street around 10:00pm...coyote was crossing Francisco (going east) cutting across a driveway. Just looked at us in the car and kept on moving, out for an evening stroll!

Before my wife and I moved to Homewood, I lived for 10 years in Glenwood right by the quarry. Every night the coyotes would sing me to sleep. It was creepy at first but then I got used to it.
I've yet to see a coyote since I moved to Homewood. I've seen practically everything else: deer, racoons, possum, smaller animals like mice, voles, chipmunks, rabbits and squirrels, of course. And maybe two dozen different species of birds (including a beautiful red tailed hawk that comes by every now and again).
On the other hand, with the size and shape of my property, and the amount of trees and brush on it, it's quite possible that we've had them come by and just didn't know it. In fact, I think it's more strange NOT to have seen a coyote than to have seen one.

I've spotted a few around my house at the intersection of Gladville & Cedar in the very late/early morning hours in the past year, and used to see quite a lot at my old house a few years ago which was on Ashland and Willow in Southgate (Indian Trails Park). They have always kept to themselves and been spooked by human presence. They're beautiful and I've always enjoyed seeing them.

Several years ago, (probably about 9), we had a coyote in our back yard. My son was only about 4 years old, so I was concerned and I called Animal Control. They told me that there was nothing that they could do. They told me to call the National Dept of Wildlife. I tried, but never got to talk to anyone, and luckily they coyote left and didn't come back. I live in Homewood west of Halsted, and so far haven't seen any lately, but if I do I hope things have changed and Animal Control will do something.

The only time animal control will come out is for a problem animal. If you leave them alone and let them live, they usually will avoid people

Realize clearly that just because you don't see them - doesn't mean they're not there watching you.
It's a simple concept, they're more afraid of you and yes even people as fearful as yourself. It's absurd that you would contact authorities, waste they're time, tax dollars and take this animals life just because the coyote was "PASSING" by!!
You may have been concerned but, you certainly did not do your homework or research; You just simply passed judgement without any knowledge. Thankfully, the coyote had more smarts than you. Glad the authorities never answered. So far, from what I've read, these comments all came from west of Halsted.
Lions, Tigers & Coyotes...Oh My!
Do you call the authorities on every driver or human that scares you?
Hate to see how you would treat people that you deem to be fearful. What a pathetic shame to have such an attitude and lack of knowledge, read it does the mind good!
The idea here is respect and understanding.

I live on 198th St and see coyotes at all hours of the day and night......we are just careful to keep an eye on our little house dog.You really have to expect to see wild life when there are so many forest preserves in the area. They are actually more scared of you then you may be of them.....I have only had a few be very bold and come up by the edge of my property and not run off when I shew them away. That is why I keep a close eye on my little dog.We also see lots of deer and we have opossum and other wild critters that linger around our property. We just understand that we actually live in there environment so as long as they don't bother us we don't bother them.It is beautiful to see such wildlife being as close as we are to the city.

I have lived on Los Angeles CT North for 15 years and the coyotes come through our yard going east every day at dusk, and return going west every morning at daybreak. I have a little shih-tzu, so I keep an eye out for his safety. One morning I walked out to our front yard and a large beautiful wolf looking coyote with blue eyes turned and looked at me! I quickly turned and went back inside my home. Thanks for this article, thought I was the only one who noticed.

I have seen them, and mostly they come out at night and early in the morni ng. They help keep the rabbit and squirrel and mice population down, so leave them alone. They mostly den at the Isaak Walton League.

If you are worried, call animal control. I have not heard of any actual problems, outside of people being a bit startled.
Last thing we need are citizens firing off guns in our neighborhoods!! Own a gun, go to the firing range, go hunting.....but not in your back yard!!

Coyote at Geneva Drive in the Moore Park Parking Lot a few weeks back. Don't know what he was eating but he thoroughly enjoyed it and stayed at the park for about 20 minutes. Didn't mind the cars driving by.....no evidence in the morning of what he ate! We were relieved to see it was not the neighbor's cat!!

Just saw a coyote on the corner of Fabyan Pkwy, & Western Ave. in the field. This is the second night in a row that I have seen them in this area. This area is real close to the Eaglebrook subdivision. I'd highly recommend for residents in this area to keep an eye on their "little dogs" when they are outside. Coyotes are a wild animal, & they do hunt for food. They don't discriminate between peoples pets, & rabb its. Don't let your pet out alone, or keep it on a leash tied up. Be aware of these coyotes.
