Homewood Man Knocked Out and Robbed in Chicago Heights

The man awoke at St. James Hospital with no clue how he got there.

A Homewood man learned a tough lesson in not leaving the bar with strangers after he was beaten and robbed Tuesday in Chicago Heights.

The 44-year-old man told police he was at a bar in University Park drinking with a man he didn't know. The stranger said he had to go meet someone in Chicago Heights, according to a Chicago Heights police report.

The Homewood man decided to leave the bar with his new acquaintance in an unknown type of vehicle, according to the report.

When he got out of the car, near the intersection of 13th Street and Center Avenue in Chicago Heights, he was hit in the head, according to the report.

The man woke up at St. James Hospital with no memory of how he got there. He was missing his wallet, which contained several important documents, including a multiple credit cards, his driver's license and banking information, police said.

The man described his drinking buddy as 6-foot-2 and about 250 pounds. He told police the man appeared to be between 35 and 40 years old.

Police report information is provided by the Chicago Heights Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.

You know it's really hard to look out for a criminal when the media withholds their race....stop worrying about racism and do your job of properly informing the public with ALL details....it's not racist when it's the truth!!!

As a "liberal loon" I take offense to that...I would like detailed descriptions too, but as Ryan has stated many times, they report exactly what's in the blotter....Ryan isn't withholding information

Thanks, FlossmoorMom. You're right. We stick to the reports as closely as possible, both for journalistic integrity and legal reasons (blotters are the easiest way to get into legal conflict if you're not careful). If there is relevant, verifiable information, you can be assured we'll include it.

Double Duh!! And to the person who wants to know the assailant's race, what difference does it make -- are you going to be on the look out for every (you fill in the race here) 6 foot 2 -- 250 lb man you see? Don't think so - calling attention to race encourages stereotyping.

OK. Let's just then refer to them as non-Caucasians

Obviously you have a very naive way of looking at the world Gigi. It is very important to know the race of a criminal because it makes it easier to identify them. You really believe giving a description of a race encourages stereotyping? Seriously? People who act like a given stereotype encourage stereotyping. Get real! The world is getting scarier by the day and we have a right to know every detail possible to survive. This place is turning into a war zone. If a certain race is so tired of being stereotyped, then maybe they need to do something within their own community. Truth is truth and you can't sugar coat the truth.

lynne, you are racial stereotyping in your own statements. You say, "If a certain race is so tired of being stereotyped, then maybe they need to do something within their own community." Maybe you should stop trying to pass off criminals as a part of a racial community. This may have been a minority criminal or it may not have been. What difference does it make? The point of the article if there was one, is to be careful when you are at a bar drinking with people that you don't know. And certainly don't leave the bar with anyone you don't know. Jeffery Dahmer found most of his victims that way.

The reality is there is very little detail one can ascertain from a racial description without an actual photograph to accompany the description. Saying a black male is just like saying a white male. It's too broad of a description to be of any use without a picture. But we have found in history that when it comes to black male suspects in particular. That information when not accompanied by more identifiable information such as a picture. Only culminates into many people unfairly looking at black men in the community as criminal suspects. Which I guess is all fine and dandy so long as you don't happen to be a black male.

Did anyone read the part where he left the bar with someone he DIDN'T KNOW and GOT INTO A CAR with him? This isn't a smart move, regardless of the race of the attacker. The only details one needs to know in order to remain safe in this instance is don't get drunk with a stranger, don't leave the bar with a stranger and certainly don't get into their car.

I was thinking the same thing Bettie! I don't really need to know the race of the person, because I don't leave bars with strangers! If the criminal was a 6'2", 250 lb white man, would you leave the bar with a 6'2", 250 lb black man, because you know it wasn't him last time? I think I'll just stick to people that I know!

In this particular case the description is not important and it seems likely the victim was so wasted his description would be unrelaible but in many other cases it is relevant. Let's be real, in the absence of a description many of us presume the race of the assailants anyway...
