Craft Beer and Boutique Wine Shop Closer to Opening in Homewood
The Homewood Village Board agreed to draft an ordinance creating a new liquor license to cater to an up-and-coming downtown craft beer and boutique wine shop.
Homewood is one step closer to getting a new craft beer and boutique wine store, after village trustees Tuesday voted in favor of drafting an ordinance to create a new liquor license catered to the potential shop.
Ron Khalaf, owner of Vino e Birra in La Grange and former owner of the now-closed Barley and Hopps in Glenwood, was present during Tuesday night’s board meeting to present his concept. Khalaf said he has 20 years' experience in the liquor business and has been working closely with the village for over six months to determine a location for his new store, tentatively named Grapes and Grain Company.
“I’m not coming to Homewood to open another liquor store,” Khalaf said. “It’s going to be a very classy place.”
According to Khalaf, Grapes and Grain Co. will sell craft beer and high-end wine only. No hard liquor will be sold with the exception of high-end scotch, which Khalaf claims has a heavy following in the area. The planned location is 18029 Dixie, a 5,000 square foot facility.
“The wines I sell—you really can’t find anywhere.” Khalaf said. “They come from small wineries, it’s not mass-produced, it’s very selective and it’s only for a select group of people. We don’t cater to everybody in this store.”
Khalaf insisted no mass-produced domestic beers will be available, ever.
The Board Responds
“This reminds me of something you would find in Bucktown,” Trustee Anne Colton said, in favor of the new shop.
Homewood Village President Richard Hofeld voiced his support for the proposed store as well.
“I think it will add a new dimension to the downtown for shopping and I think it will be a very nice business to have in town,” Hofeld said.
The New Ordinance
Village Attorney Chris Cummings articulated some of the details of the new ordinance after Trustee Colton prompted him with some clarifying questions.
“We’re writing this specifically for the business,” Cummings said.
The new license is planned to allow for the following sales:
- High-end wine
- High-end beer
- High-end scotch
- In-store service of up to two drinks, per person, per day
According to Cummings, Khalaf could sell the business to another qualified owner under the same constraints and the license would transfer. As such, Cummings assured Trustee Colton that meticulous detail will go into the drafting of the ordinance.
“We’re writing this very tightly,” he said.
Upon drafting, the ordinance will return to the board at a later time for voting.

Does high end mean $$$$?

My understanding of "high-end" is that it typically means a higher price for a superior quality product.

Meghan,
Don't let high end scare you. When we say "high end", we mean QUALITY not $$$$$

Excellent! I hope he's going to continue to have home brewing supplies as well. I really miss his old store Barley and Hops where you could get supplies to make your own beer as well as buy excellent quality craft beers as well!

Lee, one of the reasons he chose this location is because it is large enough for him to continue to sell the home brewing items. He will be selling wine making items as well and will hold monthly classes for making each. Very exciting!

If you like the selection of homebrew supplies at Barley and Hops, you're not going to believe the selection at the new place. You'll be more than satisfied.

I understand that Scotch is a trend, but what happens when something else gets trendy, and we are stuck with Scotch on the ordinance? Can't we open it up to other high end liquor?

The Scotch will most likely be sold around the holidays. They are perfect for gifting.

Laura,
We don't want to be a liquor store. The scotch thing is seasonal. Our main focus is on GREAT BEER, SELECT WINES and HOMEBREWING SUPPLIES. There's plenty of liquor stores around, but nothing like our operation.

I'm excited about it! I'm just hoping he'll consider an almond sparkling wine similar to what Cooper's Hawk sells so I don't have to drive to Orland to get it (hint hint).

As long as they don't sell colt 45....nobody wants to see the Dolton or Harvey crowd lined up around the store drinking from brown paper bags.....keep it too pricy for them and we're good

I wonder how St. Joes feels about the proximity of a liquor store? Anyhow, I always thought it would be nice to be able to pick up a six pack of microbrew on the way home from the train. Although, if they price things the way they did at Barley & Hops, this place maybe too upscale for me and my wallet.

Upscale does not mean pricey. Barley and Hops prices were cheaper than Binny's! They know what they're doing and it beats going to BevArt to pick up brewing supplies.

The Grape & Grain company is going to sell craft beer/microbrews, fine wines, and homebrewing supplies. We are not a "liquor store", nor will we carry any domestic and mass produced beer. You cannot come into our store and fine bud, miller, coors, schlitz, old style etc. etc. This store caters to those who have a passion about quality beer and wine. We will also be serving beer and wine on premise as well as package retail for off premise consumption. The Grape & Grain is one of a kind in Homewood and the surrounding suburbs. Those who homebrew will find this store to be a dream come true. We will carry everything that is associated with making quality beer and wine. I"m looking forward to seeing all our past customers of Barley and Hops at the new Grape & Grain. Please don't hesitate to ask questions and give us your ideas of what you would like to see at this new location. If we don't have it (which i doubt we wont) , we will order it for you. Our prices are more than competitive, and just because we consider ourselves upscale, does not mean that we are pricey. Our prices are more than competitive in this market. Affordability is our goal, but quality is our priority. Hope to see everyone there. Opening day is late July, or early August. We will keep you posted.

That's great Ron! We're looking forward to being able to look around! It would be nice to get good beer without having to drive all the way to Binny's or Cooper's Hawk. Maybe it will be an incentive for friends to have decent beers at their functions versus that Budweiser or Miller stuff...lol.

That regular liquor store place on Halsted, on a busy street, failed. Why should village resources be risked on a niche product that potentially is doomed to also fail like that failed wine place in floosemore?
Ron K

Minnie,
The place on Halsted was a huge success. The reason we closed it was because of the poor quality of the shopping center. If u take a closer look at the Glenwod Plaza property, I'm sure you'll notice the unacceptable condition that it is in. If we failed on Halsted why in the world would we take a chance moving to a less busy street in Homewood? The answer is because we have a huge following in the area and our customers have been patient in waiting on our return. We are not investing over $400,000 in our new place if we failed a mile away in Glenwood. Your logic makes no sense at all. It is small business's like ours that bring good to the community, otherwise these spots would stay vacant for a very long time. FAILURE is not an option and never will be. SUCCESS is what we are. Seeing is believing, so we hope u stop in when we open so u can see for yourself.

Your correct on the structure off of Halsted, it truly needs to be demolished at this point. I would place a good bet that the overall repairs that are necessary would be equivalent to rebuilding. Your right, "Failure is NOT an option" neither is backwards! I love the positive attitude!
I absolutely agree 100% regarding your small business comment. Although, I don't drink, I do look forwards to your establishment in Homewood and will support your business. It will be a wonderful place to purchase an upscale gift, or try a new wine sample. Of course, having claimed that I don't drink, I would be dependant on good advice which I'm sure to receive within your establishment. I would rather spend a few extra dollars for the quality, being a local business is just all the more motivation.
Good luck to you and best of wishes for smooth opening!

Thank you Ladydemo and Wags69. We look forward to serving people like you who appreciate a business that has taste and class. We are not a "liquor store" like a lot of others think. You will find our place very unique and one of a kind, not only in Homewood, but other villages too. You don't have to be a big drinker to come here. Gift items, wine and beer baskets will be sold here. They make great gifts for friends and family members. Our free wine and beer tastings tends to attract those who never even drank before. We're going to have a "ladies night out" with live entertainment etc.etc. So spread the word, and hope to meet you soon. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!
