Is Satan Thwarting Jesse Jackson Jr.'s Re-Election Bid?
Debbie Halvorson fires back Tuesday against Jackson camp, asking why the congressman hasn't renounced assertions by one of his pastor backers that she's backed by "demonic forces."
Pastor Willie James Campbell opened a campaign event for U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. this week by decrying the "Satanic forces" arrayed against the congressman in his Democratic primary fight.
“We stand together, united behind this congressman, who stands in the forefront, battling political demonic forces that would keep us from receiving that which you have ordained for us to have.”
Campbell, the pastor of St. James Ministries, Church of God in Christ, implied that God has ordained Jackson be re-elected to Congress and all those who oppose his campaign are doing the devil's work.
“God has men in place that can go into spiritual warfare against every demonic force that comes to disrupt and divide people of God,” Campbell said. “We want the devil to know you’ve already lost. There’s no way in the world you can win with men of God who stand before the Lord’s people, coming together united and saying to the devil, ‘You are defeated.’ ”
Rick Pearson, reporting in Clout Street on ChicagoTribune.com, writes that Jackson and his campaign have declined to comment on the remarks, uttered Monday at a South Side campaign event, nor denounce them.
Campbell later told Pearson that Halvorson herself wasn't "demonic" but that she was "selfish" and "looking out for herself."
Tuesday afternoon, Halvorson's campaign issued a statement to supporters and the news media.
"Desperate politicians do desperate things to save their own jobs. And right now, Congressman Jackson is desperately trying to save his job. After 17 years of putting himself before the people and failing to deliver, the people want change," Halvorson wrote in an e-mail.
Halvorson, a longtime state senator and one-term congresswoman, is challenging Jackson in the March 20 Democratic primary. She says she's running because many people in the 2nd District believe Jackson hasn't accomplished much while in office.
Jackson has been embarrassed recently by a congressional ethics investigation, accusations that his supporters tried to trade money to convicted ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich for Jackson's appointment to the U.S. Senate, and revelations about marital infidelity.
Last week, WBEZ reported that Jackson's congressional staffers may have used government resources on campaign-related communications.
Is Jackson getting desperate? Do you think accusations that Satan is trying to derail his re-election have a place in the campaign? Tell us in the comments.

Once you ask the clergy into the race, they're going to bring what they talk about, which in part, is God and Satan, an Us and Them scenario that is absolutely meant to reflect the candidate. Halvorson herself knows this: “I realize that the gateway to the African American community starts with the churches. My success in public service is credited in large part to my close ties to the African American Clergy."
(PS. I love how this story is listed as "Breaking," as though we're waiting for a statement from Satan!)

This man is beyond pathetic as a public servant. What does a Democrat like this have to do in this state to lose? He's done very little for our district, and his agenda now about this
silly airport nonsense and his latest indescretions speak volumes.....please people let's get him out now. It will only help us all. The same people keep getting elected and we end up shafted every single time. Time to stop supporting phoneys and just flat out bad people. No integrity.. no honesty ..no vision , that should be his slogan!!
Take some time and look closely at what he's done since representing us...you'll be shocked. We can do this!

On September 21, 2010, Jackson said of his affair with Peruvian Giovana Huidobro: "is a private and personal matter between me and my wife " [209](Associated Press). The Peruvian hostess was flown to Chicago twice by political fundraiser Raghuveer Nayak one month before the 2008 November election in a bid to see if Jackson would pony up $6 million in exchange for an Illinois senate seat being vacated by Barack Obama.

There is another article in The Patch that bears consideration as well. The League of Women Voters anounced the cancellation of their Candidate Forum scheduled for March 3rd at Lincoln Mall. The LWV was informed by Congressman Jackson "that he would not participate". As noted, it seems that the Congressman is available to listen when the conversation is "in DC", not however in Matteson Ill. Should the Congressman have chosen to appear, "Mike" you would have been afforded to hear both candidates plans "NOW". The results of the 2010 election in the 11th District were, Kinzinger 57.3% and Halvorson 42.7%, I suggest you do the math.

Michael, I think you are missing my point. Not bashing Halvorson, but since you know her so well and talk to her. How about tell her to call the Suntimes and Tribune about her plans. Voters will not think about what she did in 2003 etc. you have been around I'm sure you been around long enough to see where I'm coming from. Mud slinging tells most folks. You rather throw out what the other guy/girl is doing wrong etc. I won't even go into Contract awards and family hiring etc. yes I agree if that is true the Congressman should have attended the League of Women Voters, Both him and Halvorson are liberals and support some of the same social issues. This election is starting to bring division. And that is not good.

Please be aware that both the Chicago Sun-Times, and Tribune called Debbie, she appeared before their respective Editorial Boards, and candidly answered their questions. I do not believe Congressman Jackson accepted the Sun-Time's invitation.
I read the Tribune's article, that is where the Congressman advised that, he expected to be under addtional scrutiny for directing a "supporter" to purchase airline tickets on his behalf, for his "social acquantance". I would not call adhering to the facts, of the Congressman's behavior "mudslinging". I regret not mentioning in my earler post, that Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson was instrumental in the Veterans Adminstration's conversion of the Silver Cross Hospital building in Joliet into a full service clinic. Military Veterans and their families now have an additional resource at their disposal, instead of a healthcare facility being disposed of.

On August 1, 2007, Jackson got into a verbal disagreement with Rep. Lee Terry, a Republican from Nebraska on the House floor. Jackson stated in floor debate that "Republicans can't be trusted" and Terry responded with "shut up" before approaching Jackson. Jackson then spoke profanities and challenged Terry to step outside, presumably for a physical fight. Steve Rothman helped avoid escalation to actual physical confrontation.[220] Martial artists throughout the Omaha, Nebraska area (Terry's district) called to inquire about Jackson's mindset and intentions.[219] Jackson says Terry was the instigator.[219] Terry says Jackson was at fault, but the two shook hands the next day and agreed to move forward in the interest of their constituents.[221] However, a week later an unidentified man who claimed to be a Jackson relative walked into Terry's Omaha office saying he was Jackson's hitman who had come to beat up Terry, which led to FBI involvement.[222] Although the story was covered in the Washington Post, and Omaha World-Herald, neither the Chicago Tribune nor the Chicago Sun-Times covered any part of the story.[223]
