Jackson Still Favored by Voters in Latest 2nd District Poll

An FBI investigation and the mental health drama surrounding U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. have not threatened his re-election to Congress, according to a poll released today.

Jesse Jackson Jr. shows a commanding lead over his two challengers, with 58 percent of likely voters saying they would send the beleaguered congressman back to the U.S. House for two more years, according to a new We Ask America poll.

Republican Brian Woodworth would be the choice of 27 percent of voters, and independent challenger Marcus Lewis is favored by 15 percent.

Woodworth said he will not read too much into the poll, but took an optimistic view of the results.

"A poll is a just poll and not an indicator of success or loss," Woodworth said. "I’m actually encouraged because Republicans typically don’t make up a third of the district. So that means maybe some Democrats have swung over. We’ll see what happens. I’m going to stay encouraged considering when I first entered the race some people were saying I would only get 15 percent.”

Lewis was even more confident, despite having some of the lowest numbers in the poll. The independent candidate said he expects to gain a significant number of voters by Election Day.

"The fat lady has not sang yet," Lewis said. "Brian, he’s topped out about as far as he’s going to go. There just aren’t enough Republican voters for Brian to have a shot. But we need the shoe to drop. I just cannot believe people will vote for a crook. I believe I can still win this."

The 2nd District has been a lock for Democrats, and in the 2010 general election, Jackson coasted to easy victory with 80 percent of the vote. The latest poll suggests the 17-year congressman's support among voters, while strong, has waned a bit this year in the face of his various problems, which include:

  • depression, a bipolar disorder diagnosis and hospitalization at the Mayo Clinic;
  • an FBI investigation of Jackson's possible use of campaign funds to decorate his Washington, D.C., home;
  • continuing questions about the congressman's role in Gov. Rod Blagojevich's effort to sell or trade the state's U.S. Senate seat in 2008, accompanied by a House ethics probe;
  • revelations about his marital infidelity.

We Ask America's automated poll of 819 voters in the 2nd Congressional District, with a margin of error of ±3.5 percent, was conducted Sunday evening, Oct. 21.

A slim majority, 55 percent, say they are happy with the field of candidates when asked "Do you agree or disagree with this statement: I am happy with the candidates on the ballot, I do not wish someone else was running instead."

Jackson was challenged in the Democratic primary by former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson, but Jackson won with more than two-thirds of the vote.

Jackson polls strongly among women and African Americans, but his support among men, whites and Hispanics is much lower, according to the poll.

  • 65 percent of all women favor Jackson, but only 40 percent of men do; 35 percent of the men chose Woodworth and 16 percent select Lewis.
  • 81 percent of all African Americans would cast their vote for Jackson
  • among likely white voters, 54 percent opt for Woodworth and 14 percent for Lewis; only 32 percent of whites would send Jackson back to Congress.
  • the Hispanic vote favors Jackson by 40 percent.

Of those polled, 62 percent identified themselves as Democrats, 18 percent said they were Republicans and 11 percent said they were independent voters.

Among independent voters, 62 percent opposed Jackson, with 41 percent picking Woodworth and 21 percent Lewis; 38 percent of independents selected Jackson.

My husband is always reachable, continues to assist the general public whether or not there is an election, has the knowledge, experience, consistent in all things and knows how to use his citizenship to get into an election and the seat will belong to each of us. So what if this is his 6th run. I am no less proud. because Anthony is a true servant of the people. Compare his works and who he represents and the choice should be clear. Mr. L. I've noted you saying to write in is a chore making him a non factor, he's run 5 times;"I am better because I am on the ballot", as if that's a good enough reason to vote for you. Kennedy won the primary via write in, and Lisa Murkowski, the Senate seat in 2010. Neither you or Mr. W. can touch the write ins' record of svs to our community. You need to campaign for him. www.voteanthonywwilliams.com He's always reachable, continues to assist the general public, knowledgeable of the issues, experienced, consistent and knows how to use his citizenship to get into an election. Anthony is who the powers are trying to keep out because they know he WILL work to improve our district by involving our public. So what if this is his 6th run. There is no shame here. The loss belongs to our district. Anthony is a true servant of all people, and I have learned to live with what he loves. Compare his works and who he represents. The choice is clear. Voters are more intelligent than you think and Anthony W Williams is worth writing in . Readers See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWDjlU6tO3s&list=UUFTxgauzpZfc4jgAUNKhL-Q&index=1&feature=plpp_video E-mail me & I will provide a list of every community in the district. A large majority of the 2nd District's voters have proven for decades (with the able assistance of Democratic Party bosses) that they are the dumbest and least informed in the nation. Gus Savage, Mel Reynolds & now Jesse Jackson Jr. If there was a Mount Rushmore for congressional incompetence, all three would be on it.

What does this Congressman have to do to lose his seat? Not showing up to work for months, keeping secrets from his constituency for months, being investigated on two different fronts...apparently not enough. Parts of the US today are reminiscent of the USSR of yesteryear.

Marcus Lewis has shown himself to be an incompetent candidate, and I urge all of the voters in his district to vote for the only candidate that can perform the duties required of the position. The clear choice for the congressional seat is Brian Woodworth. Please don't re-elect a candidate that won't be able to perform his duties. We need someone that is capable of doing the work that we need done.

Ahhhhh, nothing like being back at the republican hate parade. The comments have not changed a bit. But the sad part is if you are smart as you claim & if you want JJJ out as you say then act like you are smart...i.e., put all of your voting energy behind me as I am the only one ON THE BALLOT that can defeat JJJ. But this is distasteful to most but with 14 whole days left, do you have a better idea?

Truly, if you want him out as you say, then focus on getting him out, drop your individual stances and focus on ONE THING, GETTING RID OF JESSE JACKSON JR.!

The choice is yours make up your minds and focus or sit down and continue to whine.

Marcus Lewis

4:49 am on Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Oh BTW, P.S.,

If you have already voted absentee or early voted, and cast your vote for Woodworth you are out of the game. Sometimes you gain the whole pie by taking smaller slices.

1st thing, Get rid of JJJ. How? Put all your energy behind someone that ACTUALLY has a chance that can garner more votes plus your own, that together can accomplish this goal. (This is what Debbie Halverson did not do right) Brian cannot do this as the Chicago Dems will not 'cross over' to him that want JJJ out. So you repubs must be the bigger ones and accomplish what Debbie SHOULD HAVE told you to "CROSS OVER", republicans voting for her plus the Dems that were going to vote for her was her best and ONLY WAY to knock JJJ out.

AND GUESS WHAT JJJ KNOWS THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET HIM AND ONLY AT ELECTIONS CAN YOU GET HIM. THE FEDS AND THE FBI CANNOT BE COUNTED ON TO DO IT "BEFORE" THE ELECTION.

What do you have to lose?

Me, I am putting it ALL ON THE LINE! I am not holding back! You should now drop the silly talk for just a moment and GET WITH THE PROGRAM!

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY.

THEN, JUST DO IT.

Why wont the 2nd district ever elect a republican??

Your best bet is voting for me to get JJJ out. Cause if you vote for Brian who is "hoping for some three way split", which won't occur, you are giving your vote up to the waste basket.

I told a group of republicans on last Tuesday night in Kankakee at a Candidate's forum, to stand with me united with one goal in mind and that is to remove JJJ from office by any means necessary! I received a thunderous ovation. I told them that united we stand divided we fall. They are not going to TParty this seat but if JJJ stays and he resigns we will get the harshest partisan the dems can throw at us.

GET SMART. Someone has to cross the aisle on this election. And it must be the republicans. You have no other choice.

Sad so many voters are unaware when Williams has been in front of all eyes for many years. O'Reilly Factor, etc. This man has run against Jack five times, with purpose and his website shows that he always knew Jack was corrupt, etc. He has helped lots of people too. Was with my parents, members of STAND in Peotone from inception. He has always stood up to the Jack and his dad and for other good causes. We saw him on news when some elderly women complained about retirement check shorted. Guess who was there to help, not Jesse, jr., not Lewis, not Woodworth, it was Mr. Williams. Then a few thousand other retired persons came forward. They got their money back no thanks to the other folk running. Mr. Jackson didn't come forward even after the fact. Even if you already voted you need to peruse the website of a true representative. We're new to the district, but Williams was there for Peotone and still is.To not be aware of his deeds one would have to be deaf and dumb. Lewis puts me at a loss for words. Glad we're not neighbors, I read he has a twin. To think there are two of him is more than I can bear X( Mr. Woodworth is pro airport. Not good and he is no Anthony Williams. A proven person of the people, Our votes were not wasted but sound investments. Our family and neighbors wrote Anthony W. Williams for the 2nd Congressional District. We truly hope everyone else does as well. Thanks Cong. Williams we appreciate you and all you do.

If a person wants to write your name in then ask them to do so. But stop with the Mr L says its a chore or I am better silliness because I am on the ballot.
I am on the ballot and Williams is not. That is a fact. And since that is the case you will see in this race it is better to be on the ballot. But I am not saying the things you claim I am saying it is you that are writing me asking questions of me. For those reasons I had to block you.
So campaign without using me as a foil. The district is in trouble and I am on the ballot to be a help and get elected by the.voters to be their representative to bring forth help.

Veronica, I appreciate your comments and your opinion, but I need to make a clarification. The only Peotone airport that I support is private expansion of Bult Field, with the cooperation of the owner, members of the local community, and area business leaders who would provide the primary funding for it. I do not support the massive airport plan currently in play with the state.
The version I support would permit for cargo transportation that local businesses have been asking for, and small passenger services that can use the current Bult Field. This plan has a very limited impact on the local community, does not destroy four townships in Will County, and has garnered support from many locals.
Thank you for mentioning the airport and giving me an opportunity to explain, so that people have a better idea of what I stand for when making their selection at the voting booth.

My campaign is piercing through decades of no action for this district that have stunted the forward progress for the residents of the former district borders.

Just look at the Villages of Harvey, Dixmoor, Phoenix, Robbins, Riverdale to name just a few.

The Chicago Southeast-side is left abandon and left to fend for itself which is why I am running to bring this Jackson-style of governing to a screeching halt!

So I know the newly added counties of Will & Kankakee will feel relief with Marcus Lewis at the helm not only will receive the Love, Care, Concern & Resources they are due but the entire district!

I hope the residents and voters of the entire district will come to believe that the era of Jesse Jackson Jr. will come to an end on Nov. 6th, 2012 because they voted for Marcus Lewis in mass. I am here to help and will put all of my efforts with the backing of the U.S. Government behind rebuilding the areas hardest hit first because the need is so great. But every area will get the focused attention they deserve.

So stand with me now 2nd District. We must roll up our sleeves and sit down together and get to work and put in action plans that you will see positive steps that we mean business on picking up ourselves and getting back our identity. We matter and I am going to show the state and country that the 2nd District is a player in the larger scheme of things positive.

BUT FIRST THINGS FIRST,

VOTE FOR MARCUS LEWIS FOR CONGRESS ON NOV.6TH!

AUSPICIOUS !

Marcus Lewis cannot be taken seriously. i mean really Marcus you don't Berate people to win , use compassion and some good sense.

Everyone please go to the Bobby Rush article on patch and read how senseless this man responds and also see his history , supposedly education at depaul but working as a mailman for 15 years. i think he lacks integrity and dignity.

lacks education and experience, lacks common sense or any sense at all,

I don't believe he has been socialized and he perhaps need to make a visit to the Mayo clinic...just sayin....

please go to the Bobby rush article and read the comments this Independent (nobody) is making

Christopher Paisley,
I do not understand why you have not taken command of this thread with this C B Smith character who is on a seek and hunt mission with these unprovoked attacks on me. I guess will continue unabated thru election day.

He/She obviously is sent by an opponent of mine and is seeking attention he or she does not get all at my expense.
This is sad as I will remember this when I become congressman-elect. This online publication allows abuse to go on adifnifum. First it was Williams family now Jackson's surrogates. I am not the incumbent but after Nov. 6th I will be.

Mr. Lewis,

C B Smith has not violated Patch's Terms of Use, but I will continue to monitor these articles.

Mr. Lewis, You are a very special type of candidate. You spew your venom on anyone who does not agree with you on certain issues. Than you demand action from the Patch because you feel someone has violated terms of agreement. Yet you also sir calls a sitting Congressman who has not been "Charged or Indicted" to be a Criminal, you claim he is cheating on his wife with women at a bar. I hope his organization has lawyers put together to place a lawsuit against you for Slander. You sir main focus has been the Congressman, and not just come out and speak about where your plans are if by very very slim chance elected. You will get 2 percent of the vote. Hope you stick around after the election tomorrow. You are pure entertainment.

Whatever your real name is CHM, Jackson won't do anything to me because everything I said us reported already and if you spent more time than be a uniformed troll on Patch you would have known what I said was old news.

JJJ was out drinking with two strange women on consecutive nights at a D.C. tavern called Briar's Burr Tavern & Hote while his wife was in Chicago. It was in the newspapers and on TV. Oh, but you missed that. JJJ has an FBI Investigation ending on him concerning misuse of Campaign funds for personal use to redecoate his D.C. home for his mother-inlaw that stays with him and his family in her own apartment in the home. JJJ is about to be indicted any day now. That story broke Oct. 12th, 2012 by Suntimes reporter Natasha Korecki. Oh you missed that and did not read the newspaper.

As for my plans for the district, you wouldn't be interested in things like Jobs Program WPA Style the U.S. Government putting you to work for a decent living wage till private industry got its act together and come back home and set up factories.

You still wouldn't be interested in Grants for College bound students instead of taking on debt from costly loans. Naw you would be interested in Moritoiriums on home
FORECLOSURES forcing the banks to freeze taking over your home and cutting a better deal with the homeowner.

You see you are too busy bad mouthing me I ask you what is JJJ doing ? I'll tell you nothing...he's hiding.

VOTE FOR ACTION, VOTE FOR MARCUS LEWIS
THE NO NONSENSE CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS

Bottom line is I am the ready right now. Been ready and now I ask for your vote We need an active fired individual that cares for the plight of those that have suffered enough through corrupt leaders as congressman that did not have our interest at heart just their own selfish agendas that ended in scandal.

RNOUGH OF THIS! I present myself to you and I ask you to vote for and do NOT embarrass this district by reelecting a crook into congress that we know will be indicted a d will never serve another da. Besides JJJ is mental and not well in the mind. By his own words.

That's enough for me. That's why I am running for the office to serve this community in Wahington to the best of my God -Given ability. Thank you.

I was the Independent Candidate in this race and I KNOW for a fact I was better the Jesse Jackson Jr.!

It was this media that never gave me (the "unknown") coverage to introduce me properly to the public from the very beginning. I should be Congressman-Elect this morning!

But the establishment of this corrupt city and state needed to dispose of this race get JJJ re elected in-spite of his eminent indictment for campaign fund misuse.

It's just that simple. The machine was not going to let not one seat go back in the hand of the little people.

You will see in the by and by that we almost pulled off the impossible and you will look back and say we should have and could have voted for Marcus Lewis but didn't because we wanted to keep Mr. Jesse "The Corrupt" Jackson Jr. and he is going to prison and the district lost a true leader that cared for the plight of the people.

He provided a place on the ballot against overwhelming odds and knowing JJJ was going to be indicted soon, they chose a thief instead of freedom.

I did my part. You all fell for the ol' o-kee-doke.

Hear now this, O foolish Marcus, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: You will never be elected to public office as you clearly do NOT have what it takes. Go thy way Marcus, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for the voters will never accepteth thy works. Oh, and just to be fair, good luck! -___-
