The Girl Scouts of Troop 448 aren't just ordinary kids.

Thanks to their dedication to spreading organ and tissue donor awaremess, they are remarkable residents.

Secretary of State Jesse White stopped by the Homewood Public Library to dedicate a newly planted tree that was donated by Troop 448 in honor of National Organ Donor Awareness Month.

“I’d like to take a moment to recognize Girl Scout Troop 448 for all their hard work and dedication to spreading awareness about the organ and tissue donor program,” White said. “They are committed to serving as role models for other Girl Scout troops.”

Secretary White announced that all members of the troop will be receiving their organ donor merit badges as a result.

“Above all, we want you to remember that we’re counting on you to be the best you can be, and we’re counting on you to help in this great country of ours,” White said.

Secretary White’s talk made an impact on the Girl Scouts of Troop 448.

“I was pretty nervous, but I’m really excited now,” Troop 448 member Kiara Carter said. “I think, when I grow up, I’m going to ( be anorgan donor).”

Jaylen Smith, another Troop 448 Scout, said that spreading awareness about organ donation is a worthwhile effort.

“It makes you a better person, it makes you a role model,” Smith said.

According to Donate Life Illinois, only 60 percent of adults in Illinois are registered organ and tissue donors. Each individual makes a big impact, however, as one donor can save or enhance the lives of more than 25 people, according to Donate Life.

In addition to the Girl Scouts, Secretary White took time to thank the family of the late Wallace Dralle for their recent contribution of $2,000 to the Homewood library for books that support organ and tissue donation awareness.

“I have a philosophy of life that says that, when you become successful in life, you have to give back,” White said. “I also believe that, every day, you should do something good for someone and you’ve done your good deed with your family and your husband, God rest his soul.”

The new tree that Secretary White dedicated can be found near the northwest corner of the Homewood library.
