New Hair Salon May Be Coming to Homewood: On the Agenda
A preview of Tuesday night’s Homewood Village Board meeting.
Homewood Village President Richard Hofeld and the village trustees will meet at Homewood Village Hall on Tuesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m.
Omnibus Vote
Among the items listed in the omnibus vote is a pavement marking bid award not to exceed $104,355.79 and a fire hydrant blasting and painting bid award not to exceed $40,000.
Potential New Hair Salon On the Horizon
Shantel Houston is requesting a special use permit from the village to open a hair salon on 2010 Elm Road. Should the trustees approve, the new salon will be named Heavenly Hands Hair Studio. Homewood Community Development Director Paula Wallrich says the salon specializes in restorative hair care. The Plan Commission favored the addition of the salon in a 3-2 vote.
Zoning Variation for The Cottage on Dixie
The owners of Homewood's upcoming fine dining restaurant will request a zoning variance for their parking lot.

Are you f'ing kidding me??? Are we not over saturated with salons already? How about a hair salon where you could buy liquor, Chinese food and learn karate? Perfect.

Surely this business owner has to see there are so many hair salons in the area already... Why would they want to come in with another one?

Please Trustees, vote no on this one.

Yippee.....another salon! Thanks Homewood for creating more competition among your established busineses in this booming economy! Appreciate the support. Sarcasm? You bet!!

A hair salon - REALLY? I guess Homewood's new slogan can be "Beauty Shop Capital of the WORLD!" So I guess the Homewood board is giving up on the concept of diversified businesses...........coffee shop leaves - put in a hair salon, restaurant leaves – put in a hair salon……and so it goes.

With an economy this bad, we're lucky to even get a hair salon.

Vote NO, please. Another salon will simply mean the closing of some other salon. There are far too many of them in Homewood, Flossmoor, and Glenwood.

Someone just posted on facebook that this business already exists...?

There's a facebook page for it and it says "coming soon." I also found this: https://www.vagaro.com/Heavenlyhandshairstudio... Premature advertising, it seems, if the trustees have yet to approve the 2010 Elm Rd location.

This location used to be a hair salon. The one right next door to Burrito Express

My recollection of "civics" tells me that it is not the "job" of local or state government to control the amount of competition of legal businesses. To deny a business the right to open in a village based on the existence of already existing business(es) smacks of cronyism, etc.

I know in my heart you are right, Elder, and we would all be just as chapped if the village was denying a business that we wanted. But I want to think that at some point, a village has to determine the overall consequences of an overabundance of any one commodity in town. In the same way that the village limits the number of liquor licenses, why wouldn't they limit the salon licenses?

WA Mama. Are you really comparing liquor licenses to hair salons? Please go back to school and study what government is supposed to do.

@thenotsosilentelder I think you're right...I'm just bummed it's not a new business type offering to the village.

Homewood has WAY too many hair salons--I hope they vote a big fat NO on this. How about something different the village doesn't have one of already at least? Like a Jamba Juice or something? Closest one in Orland Park and always does great business

Before you guys are quick on the trigger...Yes we have a plethora of nail/hair shops but go look at the property they want next to burrito express. Tell me what else could go in that tiny vacant property? probabely nothing besides a 2 seat hair studio. I for one am for property rights and we are basically forcing the property owner to have a vacant property if it is voted down. if this was on ridge rd. I may have a different view if this was on dixie or ridge but I think this is the best thing that could go in this location

For those who are quick to suggest other types of businesses for the village (which I am for), please go to the Mayor and the Village Manager and offer your expertise to them as it relates to finding and negotiating with these proposed businesses. Sometimes, when I read comments on the Patch, I think brainpower has gone on vacation.

Finally! Someone else gets it! Thank you. I would like to add that to all those who think a certain business would thrive in this community, please open it yourself. You clearly understand the market and your business would prosper.

Good luck to this new venture. Only the future will tell if it was a good idea or not. It does not hurt anyone. Whatever salons are the best will stay open.

Apparently this owner has a beauty shop on 111th street. Will she be moving her current business to Homewood, or opening a second beauty shop?

Please somebody else respond to HFMom. I cannot possibly dignify her question. The more they write, the less sense they make.

I agree with the commenters that say that this space is well suited for a salon of this sort and off the main drag enough to be fairly inconsiquential. I do hope, however, that we will not hear that the city will be passing out cash for building improvements or new hair dryers!
Also, whats with the snarky personal attacks (elder)? Everyone is entitled to an opinion. YOU do not get to determine the merit or validity of those opinions. There is a respectful way to disagree...you should try it.

While I agree that the village shouldn't be determining exactly what businesses should be allowed they do seem to be the ones granting the permits and giving out money to certain businesses don't they? To me, another hair salon seems like a poor idea since there are so many already but hey, as long as the city isn't allowed to pass out funds to start it, let the have there chance. Now that we have lost so may trees maybe instead of "Tree City" Homewood can be known as "Salon City"! How appealing is that??? NOT.
