Obama's Advisor Headed to South Suburbs for Fundraiser

Prairie State Trustee and Chicago Heights Resident Wendell Mosby explains the purpose of the under-40 fundraiser.

David Axelrod will be in the South Suburbs next week for a fundraiser supporting President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

Axelrod is not a household name, but many who closely followed Obama's 2008 campaign have heard of him. He was the then-candidate's campaign advisor, who picked up the title "Senior Advisor to the President" after the election. Axelrod is now back on the campaign trail.

"He is the architect for the ‘08 campaign," said Wendell Mosby, a Chicago Heights native and co-chair for Gen44 helping to promote Axelrod's visit.

Gen44 is an under-40 fundraising program under Obama for America and it is comprised of "next generation of leaders, young entrepreneurs, social innovators and activists," according to the Obama's campaign Website.

Mosby, who has been a part of the organization since 2011, said despite Axelrod's presence, the event is not solely aimed at getting Obama reelected. He describes it as a chance to galvanize the Southland, playing up the exclusivity of meeting Axelrod in a smaller setting.

"To have unprecedented access... Mr. Benny’s can’t hold a thousand people, so it’s going to be an intimate group," Mosby said. "People can look at this guy and hear what he has to say and maybe have an opportunity for some questions and answers."

In discussing the event, Mosby kept referring to a "voter apathy" seen through a sharp reduction in voters in the years following the 2008 elections.

The Prairie State College trustee said he wants people to care about the state and county level elections as much as the presidential one, adding that it can be difficult to organize an inspiring event for young people in the South Suburbs.

"In Chicago, it’s easy to put an event on at a lounge and make politics sexy," Mosby said. "In the ‘burbs, you have to be way more creative in how you make politics sexy for a young professional. That’s what I’m really looking to do."

Co-hosts for the event include, U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., State Sen. Toi Hutchinson and State Rep. Anthony DeLuca.

The fundraiser will be at Mr. Benny's in Matteson and general admission tickets are $100.

If Blacks don't like that reference to them then what's with the Black American History month, Black music awards, Black TV BET, Black beauty contest, the list is endless. Yet you don't see other races throwing their color into the mix and crying discrimination, do you now. It's only a reference because Blacks make it that way. I don't see color I see people and racists.

Nope. I've not personally benefited from any of his new policies. In fact, I'm paying more for healthare and I've not been able to lower my mortgage rate. But that's OK with me because I see my neighborhood improving and I see people who were very ill who could not afford to pay for their medications getting well again. There are more American-made cars on the roads these days and my neighbors who had lost their jobs are finding new ones and holding onto their homes. I voted for Obama. I'm not entirely satisfied with his first term but I will vote for him again because he is moving the US in the right direction. Besides, the alternatives are laughable. No one can reasonably dispute that.

He is the racists along with Michelle who is now proud of America for the first time in her life. Who the hell fought for her to have the right to say it. Not the Obummer or her. Maybe her father-in-law, which was another scam for the Obummer to latch onto. Do some fact searching and leave out the race card which is always used with frequency when nothing else is left. When you take from one group and give to another, the hand recieving will always be out, and you are now enslaved to the system. Doesn't that make you feel proud? All your friends and neighbors looking for a way to stay in the private sector rather than find the gov to take care of them. You create your own slavery by accepting this guy's Dumbocratic policies. Now go get a job in the private sector and help pay for your brother on the dole.

Blacks are the biggest racists. When 98.7% of blacks voted for Obama in 2008, it is clear that they based their vote on only one thing: color. And most of them figured, 'he's one of us' and 'he gonna get us even mo free stuff'. You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts.

Obama expects money from the southland, and then the people here get nothing in return. It's pretty pathetic when you have to feed off one of the nations more economically depressed regions, and then they get nothing in return. If Obama were serious about helping the region, then he would stop giving money to corrupt nations overseas and instead invest it here and entice new business and education programs for the region.

Those who think that Mitt, Rick or any of the republican candidates are any different are fooling themselves. Two of the remaining four are proud to be called "big government" conservatives and are WarHawks, Mitt operates off the same fiscal policy as Obama...so don't expect any "change" there either. If you are serious about supporting someone who will actually improve conditions for us, look OUTSIDE the current 2 party system and vote for a new future.

3rd Party politics may be inriguing, but won't happen in 2012. If you vote for a 3rd Party candidate you are throwing away your vote and, in effect, voting for Obama. At least the Republican candidates know about the U S Constitution and will govern within its bounds, unlike the current guy who thinks he's a dictator, and the Constitution is just some old piece of paper in the Smithsonian.

While I appreciate the civil discourse, I am not surprised by the racial undertones from several of the comments. It is 2012 and the reality is that we still have a long way to go even in the Southland on the race relations front. The Constitution is an awesome document and more importantly is the Articles of Confederation yet its the Bill of Rights that gives the Constitution its teeth. Moreover, the real power lies in the hands of Congress, who is the "only branch" that has the authority to create laws. Lastly, even though you may not agree with where the country is, please respect the office of the President and the First Lady by addressing them as such. Thank you

I concur with you Wendell, while I don't agree with Mr. Obama and his politics most of the time I find no need to bring race into the discussion. If there is to be a discussion on African American support and Obama, then it should be done in a civil and academic manner rather than an ethnocentric viewpoint.

All that being said, I am a 20 year old man...and he isn't doing much for me. I am interested in the libertarian approach to government, which I think we should all look at. Freedom to grow would benefit all peoples of the Southland!

Which incidentally is why you support Obama......and of course because he is black! You gotts to get your Obama money! So you go ahead and talk about racial undertones when in reality you NEED this division in society so you can play off it and gain financially. I see it everyday! Blacks talk like they hate the racism but they need it for so many reasons. Educational scholarships, affirmative action, elected positions like Obama---the list goes on and on. So quit your whining and go support your boy Obama like the other 97% of blacks.

Jim, I hear you but calling the President a Socialist is still being very short sighted. Capitalism is root of our Nation's problems and that's way bigger than President Obama. Corporations and their shareholders benefit from every program designed to help support those in need i.e., grocery stores, insurance carriers, retailers etc,. Congress can defund any program that the President puts forth and your assertions about violating the Constitution is a very weak presumption. Take care

The free market built this country, and is the basis of our Constitution. Socialism is the antithesis of capitalism. Spreading the wealth only works until you have killed the golden geese: the taxpayers. Then the government can no longer deliver on its promised 'free stuff' - and you get Greece. Or more specifically you get what we have in Illinois - a bankrupt state that raises taxes to chase even more businesses out of state. It's economics as much as politics.

Actually, Russ, our President has had a successful first term. Unprecidented federal operations spending cuts, the end of media blackout on war casualties, the Freedom of Information Act, the enforcement for equal pay for women, The Matthew Shepard Act, lower medical costs for seniors, small business loans initiative, helped to uncover mortgage fraud and paved the way for fewer foreclosures... I can go on. But you can easily Google search his accomplishments. I'm not entirely satisfied with his first term. He could have done a lot more had he the balls to stand up early on to the very obviously anti-Obama and anti-black man atmosphere in Washington. But he has made great strides and his plans look good for even more imporovements here as well as globally. Anyone who doesn't see that what he has done as a huge improvement to the former administration is closed minded.

Same situation with the fake reverend's son. We need to get them out ...this isn't working. It's not a black thing, it's about what we need for the immediate future. Illinois is in a total bag of crap and if you look at what we have, it is all democrats who have not performed. The working class cannot continue to support the entitlement society he is creating. If he was an old gray haired fat white guy the media and electorate would be having a field day to oust him. Look past his flash and analyze the facts. We are not only going nowhere with him, in some respects we are going backwards. Stop apologizing to the world..get off your butt and do the job..be a leader..be a visionary with a plausable vision..it seems hes been on a re-elction campaign since he first took office. Well, Christine.
I belong to the Polish American Club, does that count for anything?

These organizations would not be necessary if people of color were treated fairly/equally. I'm white. I see the discrimination. I support these organizations because they are necessary for people of color to have even a slim chance to reach goals that people with beige/peachy fleshtones are all but handed on a silver plater.

"White Guilt"? Maybe people need to learn a little history. Before the U.S. Civil War only 10% to 15% of of the white people in the south were slave owners. The other 85% to 90% were either too poor or they didn't believe in the system of slavery. After the Civil War ended the large waves of immigrants started to arrive from Europe. Today the majority of White's in the U.S. are descended from people who never owned slaves. Hopefully the "guilty white people" will turn off their TV's, go to the library and get a couple of history books to read.

May the truth set you free!

@nick: Start with the history books that talk about how "Americans" raped and stole this land from the people who occopied it before we did. May the truth set you free.

Bumper sticker I saw last week:

If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove that you aren't a racist, please vote for someone else in 2012 to prove you're not an IDIOT.

@Nick: You must have had to get awfully close to the car to read that many words on a bumper sticker.

Who else can a person vote for in the 2012 election to prove that they are not an idiot? At this point in the Republican run-off, the choices are 1) "I don't care about the poor or about the environment or about animals or about global issues" and 2) "I don't care about women or children or anyone other than white Christian men."

1) I'm trying to find the correlation with Blacks being racist for supporting President Obama when it took a significant portion of the White electorate to get him into office. 2) Why didn't anyone call the "white flight" of 80's in the South Suburbs racist or why today, there isn't any "affordable housing" in Frankfort, Mokena, Naperville nor Orland Park. 3) I haven't read one solutions to addressing any of our "local" problems. 4) Nick. You have any facts and figures on some of our local communities...

What do you mean by "affordable housing?" Subsidized? BTW the IL Sec of State reports that the corporation your profile so prominently lists you as "Founder" of has been involuntarily dissolved by the State. Might want to get on that...

Let's be clear. Affordable housing is not a right. Our rights are life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness. The free market does not guarantee you housing, jobs, a car, health care. You have a right to what you can pay for. That's called Capitalism, the system upon which the USA was formed. All these rights you apparently refer to are what Socialists promise. And anyone with half a brain should realize that Socialism does not work. Go to Italy, Greece, Spain, and see what the USA will look like with 4 more years of Obama.

Wendell:
1) In the 2008 election Obama got 43% of the white vote and 98% of the black vote (I've also seen it listed as 95%). Many people think that McCain should have got 43% of the black vote in a color blind election. Since 98% of blacks voted for Obama, some whites claim that blacks are more racist than whites.

Total voter turnout was 63%. Which means 37% of eligible voters didn't like McCain or Obama. (If the 37% that didn't vote, came out and voted for one of the 3rd party candidates like Ralph Nader he would have been close to winning the popular vote, if there was 100% voter turnout)

Much ado about nothing. The president has Illinois electoral vote locked up. Therefore there is no need the Democratic party to pay any attention to Illinois other than to raise funds. As Chicago's majority Democrat voters spread throughout Cook County and now the collar counties, Illinois is a One party state. It also has the highest debt load per capita of any state, the worst credit rating, and the worst finances. Even the Europeans now call us "Greece by the Lake" The people get the government they deserve and that is certainly the case here.....

For what its worth

Being a veteran it is extremely difficult for me say the following but it is true:
It is time move. The fall of America is near, not because of race, politics, religion or economics. America (now the third most powerful nation) will self emplode because of our morals. Don't beleive it!? Just read the comments posted on this page. There is no solution to fix our current problems, There is no "do over" here. People will continue to look for the easiest path at the expense of others. I suggest those who wish to return to family values find another location in the world in order to start over again. America as we once knew it is GONE and will not return. Blame goes to more than a President, Senator, Congressman it goes to all of us. But it was a nice run while it lasted. I decided to follow the trend I am collecting SSN, Unemployment, VA benefits and welfare and looking for as many I can get. I am tired of being the moral man, doing the right thing I will stick around and suck every cent I can until the lights go out. Farewell America!
