What Would You Improve in H-F in 2013?
If you could make a New Year's resolution for Homewood or Flossmoor (or both), what would it be?
More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money.
As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Homewood and Flossmoor to make it an even better place to live?
Perhaps you would like to see more diversity in downtown local businesses. Maybe you the local elections in spring are on your mind. How about crime, or education?
What is on your H-F wish list? What is one thing you would improve in 2013?

We should stop over taxing the people that live here by bringing in or businesses! Work to reduce crime rates by increasing funding to the police department and most of all reduce the number rules imposed by the town to allow citizens to do what they want on their property as long as it doesn't negatively effect neighbors!

Traffic signs at every street along Wallace before their is a serious accident.
Better leaf pickup plan-no stickers.
Curbs and sewers on Burns.
More street lights in the old town neighborhood.

Well the mama's of HW and some in Floss use to send their baby gangsters and a few girls to the neighboring towns for 24/7 parties they then pretend they do not live in nor create the ghetto I was a VICTIM OF THE lack of Police and Mamma boy enforcement of curfews and all the BS they scum bring with them, the first thing I would do fire the TRUANT and residency officers at HF, they have contributed to the decline of the school and community as much as SEC 8 or bangers.

I am hearing a great amount of negativity....do we even live in the same neighborhood? We are not close to becoming "South Harvey" or any such place. I think that people are making this beautiful town seem much worse than it is. Get over yourselves. If this neighborhood is so bad then come together and make it better....or better yet move! I love this neighborhood with all my heart and am saddened by such ignorant comments. What would I change about Homewood... I would try to make the north viaduct safer.

The only people still living in Flossmoor are stuck there. The average home price fell from 1980 to 2005-I won't even add in the subsequent loss due to the economy. All these carpetbaggers moved in because they couldn't believe the supposed value they were getting, when in fact the old timers were laughing at you for moving in at the peak of prices, HS test scores and community values. Where did they go? Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Downers, Naperville, all embody what Flossmoor used to be like.

HAHA. Started to change in 2008? What are you, 20 yo? I moved there more than 60 years ago, stuck it out for 20, didn't want to move but saw the same changing demographics as South Shore, compounded by the location (used to be referred to as a south suburban island). Don't be ignorant. Do yourself a favor and read up on the history of the south side of Chicago and the flight to the south suburbs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about it, really liked the area, but it is no longer a desirable community on any front.

If I could change anything I would like to see the pessimistic trolls on these boards actually do something constructive rather than complain about how terrible Homewood and Flossmoor have gotten. Guess what - home values have fallen all over the country and particularly in the Chicagoland area. So get over your bitterness of the equity you lost in your home -- it was a real estate bubble and houses were valued too high. While you're at it you can get over your nostalgic hallucination of what Homewood and Flossmoor used to be. There's nothing wrong with Homewood and Flossmoor today that couldn't be fixed by a small group of committed citizens and what was good about this community in the past wasn't because of pessimistic do-nothings.

Finally!!!! Thank you, Wags69 for your comment "There's nothing wrong with Homewood and Flossmoor today that couldn't be fixed by a small group of committed citizens..." Before buying my home in Flossmoor, we considered moving to Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Downers, Naperville and Frankfort; because they're not in Cook County with the high taxes! My husband and I chose Flossmoor/Homewood because of its history of good schools for our kids and the family-oriented community. What would I change?
1) Residents to stop complaining or making excuses & help make a change!
2) Stop blaming Truant or Police Officers & make the parents babysit their own kids!
3) Attend Board Meetings, voice your complaint, sign petitions for more officers
4) Project your investments & stop allowing your neighbors to be victimized
5) HF Community Neighborhood Watch Organizers
6) Residents/parents should volunteer to help the school districts
7) Help enforce the laws that streets are for vehicles, not teenagers walking in the middle of it or playing basketball/football in the middle of them...use your driveway
8) HF should hire Community Officers so the Police Officers can focus on crime
9) Add street lights in the residential areas/subdivisions where crime increased
10) Parents stop socializing when dropping off/picking up kids can reduce accidents

As a Resident of Homewood, I would like to see some major improvements on 183rd street near Kedzie. The Homewood signage is dated and doesnt look as nice as the signs going into the downtown area. It seems after you reach governors hwy, the rest of Homewood is forgotten. The Jewel food store could also use some major improvements etc.

The majority of the postings that I am reading here are nothing more than thinly veiled racist remarks. In reality the racist have done more damage in constantly bashing the image of Flossmoor than any changing demographic has. Blacks for the most part have done nothing more than invest there hard earned money in the area buying nice homes with high property taxes. While more and more whites have moved out to orland and indiana. The median family income in flossmoor is currently over $150,000 a year by the way. Some ghetto. Flossmoor is a very nice area, let's not let the racist destroy it.

Half the families in Flossmoor earn more than $150k? Thats higher than Wilmette!!! Who knew?? And how many live below the poverty line? I knew it wouldn't take long for the "racist" remark to come out. You know what led to the decline? All the trash homes built in heather hills, and the wannabes that were attracted. All that was BB-before black.

Nothing thin about it your racism, it is terrorism to me, the mommas of the terrorists have been calling me racist since I blew the whistle on their gangster wannabe not so thinly veiled illegal activities next door to my house which has been abandoned for more than 3 years and will require a massive rehab which use to be a tremendous 5 BR with pool and on and on and now is boarded up symbol of every one is entitled to a Home or the Bubble of the Bush years which now thanks to racist gangster wannabe's is a eyesore while you enjoy living in Shang ra la the wannabe offspring were destroying towns that send their kids to HF and get the benefits of the taxes and additional add ons without the uses.
Us old folks white and black or fools which is what the mommas call me are the victims of collateral damage we have also invested hard earned money in what was nice areas but still has high taxes thanks to the HF gangsters most of the remaining old fools who had the same expectations when we sent our kids to a school that had a high achievements are toast, our homes and area use to be a selling point and still is if u compare it to the killing zone schools of the South side, but if they destroyed neighboring homes as the HF wannabe's did we have nothing but memories which can be racist but are usually accurate.

How to improve H-F? That's easy. All "Butch and Kenny" believers leave H-F. Take your pretzel logic and exaggerated sense of who you are and scram. You don't want to be here and we don't want you here.

Moving To Homewood
I think "Butch" is actually a teenager with too much time on his hands and is actually part of the "dumbing down" he continues to mention, hence "u" instead of "you" and the run-on sentences. Not sure when or where you attended school, but this ----> . <---- is called a period. You might want to use it so your ramblings make a little bit of sense.
Sadly I've noticed that almost every paper that covers the northern and western suburbs have residents engaging in intelligent and productive comments about their communities, even when disagreeing with each other. Papers covering the south suburbs are full of ignorant and racist, yes there's that word, comments. This reflects badly on a community where the majority are decent, highly-educated folks.
Homewood and Flossmoor are NOT ghetto places, all you have to do is drive around to see that. However, they do have ghetto residents, as does every community in the United States because "ghetto" is also defined as low-class or unrefined. And we all know that low-class people come in all colors. Agreeing with others, "Don't Feed the Trolls."

Gresham, West Englewood, Gage Park, Marquette park our old stomping grounds are now as safe as Juarez or any Cartel settlement this side of the Hindu Kush!

I've lived in Homewood for over 30 years, I agree it's changing and not for the best. Especially on my block, which has 3 rental houses to the east of my property, one next to me which is Section 8 with an absentee owner, who doesn't care about the property just as long as he gets his money from HUD by renting it to these disrespectful people, who come and go at all times of the night along with lots of noise and loud cars with no Homewood stickers but are parked at this residence 7 days a week. These rental houses need to be monitored to keep this from happening. I've informed the village of this rental house which is problem but nothing is done so there goes my neighborhood along with the decline in my property value. Plus I just received my water bill which went up an additional $25.00, due to Mayor Rahm and lack of concern from Homewood's Village President & board, who are only concerned about making life good for themselves and not the taxpayer who supplies them with the money. It's getting harder for me to live in Homewood & to keep up with Homewood's excessive taxes and careless spending.

I have lived in Homewood since 1971 and have been selling homes here since 1984. Our home prices have gone down just like the rest of the country...its not abour our neighborhood, or our schools or our diversity. When our values skyrocketed it was with the rest of the country and when they fell it followed the same trajectory. As to the area as a place to live...I could live anywhere I want and when I got married I moved 3 blocks and when we had our 3rd kid I moved 2 more blocks...HF is an amazing place to live, a spectacular place to raise a family, my children played on the same little league fields I did, they went to the same schools and even had some of the same teachers I did, theres a reason so many of us have chosen to stay here and enjoy our Mayberry of the Midwest area! Of course there will always be room for improvement and growth...thats life anywhere. I am committed to our community as are so many of the amazing people who live here. As far as my dream list...would love it if we had a Trader Joes...beyond that its all good!

Says one of the "price 'em low and move 'em fast" realtors who basically blockbusted and then redlined the various neighborhoods in HF. Doesn't matter if the buyer will be foreclosed, or bring in a batch of cousins from the city to live, or will use the house as a mail drop for HF school residency. A sale is a sale, right?

I agree with you Ron, I have lived here since 1984, and have seen a lot of changes, both good and bad, and I say that a Casino in a location that was nothing more than a brothel is a very bad idea. The money that we gained would be lost in increased crime and gang activity.

Well a empty lot on land that was a brothel is a upgrade! The Casino contribution to the tax rolls for the village schools and surrounding area will insure u will have no gang or obvious drug activity while modernizing the AGING infrastructure what is wrong with HF is the people who live there believe they the chosen made it SHANG RA LA without any help from the RR, Washington Park RACE TRACK and WWII. These amazing schools, places of worship and people are endowed by their amazing dNA and do not need a racetrack or Casino they still have downtown Home sweet Homewood and Kmart Target while the IC which will also be a thing of the past with the new owners concentrating on other areas. Boomer has not contributed as much as DINK on how to make HF better,Ron sells houses everything is outstanding while on the border and in HOME SWEET HW there are enclaves of abandoned Sec 8 HOUSES with even brothels and other illicit activities going on just like every normal place in the phony real-estate BUBBLE.
