Will a Meijer Superstore Come to Flossmoor?
Project proposed for land near Vollmer and Crawford. The village board will take up the issue in December.
The corner of Vollmer Road and Crawford Avenue in Flossmoor could look very different if a proposed Meijer supercenter is approved by the village board in December.
Earlier this month, the Plan Commission approved the company's proposal for a 192,000-square-foot store.
Flossmoor Planning Director Patrick Finn told Sun-Times Media some residents expressed concerns:
“They talked about the impact on the neighborhood. There were some concerns about traffic with Crawford being a two-lane roadway. There were also some concerns about noise and light pollution. We’ll be working with Meijer to see if we can take care of everyone’s concerns and mitigate them.”
Three houses on the property would be demolished if the Meijer is built, but completion of the store would be a few years off, according to Meijer. The store would stand within the Southwest Flossmoor Tax Increment Financing District.
The closest Meijer in the Southland is in Orland Park.

If the Village turned this down, they'd show what huge fools they are! Meijers is a great store. I shop the one in highland, in, cause its nicer that tinley park! Their quality is top notch and it would be outstanding tax revenue for the village. They would draw customers like crazy!

I would rather see a Pete's Fresh Market.

A Whole Foods or Trader Joes would be great!

As much as I would like to see this go in to help mitigate Flossmoor's high real estate taxes, use of eminent domain is for public use and not to transfer land to a different private owner. Such erosion of private property rights is tyranny. I hope the property owners will be willing to sell voluntarily.

A store of this magnitude will create a huge traffic issue for those of us who live close by. It will not reduce our taxes and will eventually be another eyesore. More than one local grocer has failed in this area and Meijers will be not different. This is truly nuts!!

It's not in my backyard so I think it's great for for taxes / jobs. It's probably best for all of us to leave stinkin' machine Hellinois but if you prefer to stay, this is the kind of thing that must happen to mitigate the burden on homeowners.

Why not build several stores instead one Hugh big box.
A Trader Joes or Whole Foods,Starbucks or Caribou Coffee, Barnes&Noble, a couple of nice restaurants, Norstrom Rack, etc.... A plethora of shops would be nicer than one huge isolated building.

cz - why not? I think it would be wildly profitable. When the ads come out every week, I always wish there were one nearby.

@PJ...I agree that several stores in a plaza would be a better idea. My only concern is the one large bldg. turning into an eyesore if Meier isn't successful like the former Charter Fitness center behind Chase Bank ... a Trader Joes, Whole Foods or Starbucks would be a great asset to this community for that location!

Great news! I think it really should be as close to to I57 for customer traffic. Other satelligh would stores will probably set up next to the busy throughfare.

Fabulous news that the Meijer corporation has selected Flossmoor! I encourage the Flossmoor Board members to welcome this family-owed business with open arms. The SW Flossmoor TIF District has sat idle for 21 years and this seems to be a positive move since the vision of a professional business complex never panned out.
Two concerns that I hope the Board members addresses with Meijer's contactors:
Stormwater Mitigation
Sustainable building practices and landscaping

I'd love to have a Meijer closer than Tinley, however, I also see the shopping center with many smaller shops as a good idea, too. One of the reasons I didn't want to live that close to Vollmer when we moved in the area was because it looked like a shopping center might be built there in the future. I also think Pulaski/Crawford needs to be widened between Walmart in CCH south to St. James Hospital.

Great News! Flossmoor definitely needs a major local business that the homeowners can support, which in turn benefits everyone.

Meijer is not much different than Dominick's. Trader Joe's would be SO welcome here. Almost everyone I know in The HF area treks out to Orland to go to TJ's and would go more if it was closer!!

Meijer is a great store. It would be nice to have a Costco, too.
