Residents of Homewood-Flossmoor and surrounding Suburbs joined together to ring in a more environmentally conscious New Year on December 29 and January 5 at the Third Annual Christmas Tree and Holiday Light Recycling Program. Held at Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center this years collection brought in over 500 Christmas Trees! Mulch from the trees will be used on the paths and trails at Irons Oaks this Spring.
This resident led initiative has proven to be a win-win, simple way to help the environment and give everlasting life to one's Christmas Tree. By repurposing their Tree donors are keeping vital nutrients out of landfills and putting them to good use right here in our very own community! Trees are 100% biodegradable. By contrast, it takes an estimated 125 years for an artificial tree to decompose in a landfill.
New this year was an expanded Holiday Light drop off program. Throughout the Season donors were able to drop off their old, broken light strings at various HF Park District locations as well as Flossmoor Village Hall. An estimated 1,500 pounds of lights were collected. The lights are disassembled by glass, copper and plastic then recycled therefore reducing the burden on the waste stream.
Our program would not be possible without them the generosity of time and money from the following Community Partners & Sponsors:
