What Should Go Here? Former Bios Life Location

Bios Life, located at 18129 Dixie Highway, closed up shop and now the location is up for lease. Patch wants to know: What Should Go Here?

Along Dixie Highway, there are numerous businesses in the Homewood-Flossmoor area, but there are also many spaces along the roadway that sit vacant. One such location is the former Bios Life at 18129 Dixie Highway. The location, which features a glass storefront and a shared entrance with a salon, has street parking, counter space and floor space for retail displays or desks for an office setting. The location could be the home of a new retail location, an business office or some sort of small, take out restaurant. Patch wants to know: What Should Go Here? Controlled Burn Mistaken for Glenwood Restaurant Fire

A few concerned readers wondered in Glenwood Oaks had burned down Friday night. The local fire department was performing a controlled burn next door, which drew the attention from neighbors.

Steak lovers can rest assured; a well-known rib and chop-house in Glenwood did not burn down Friday night. A few onlookers set up chairs and watched Friday night as Glenwood firefighters conducted a controlled burn that leveled a building on North Main Street. Some Patch readers were concerned that Glenwood Oaks, which is located close the site of the burn, was the source of the fire and had possibly burned down. Restaurant General manager Mark Lerose assured Patch the much-loved restaurant was still standing. The controlled burn, which was started by the Glenwood Fire Department, began at about 9 p.m. "Customers and neighbors had lawn chairs, watching, Lerose said. Homewood-Flossmoor area residents looking to purchase brand new houseware items at half the retail cost, The Sertoma Thrift Store in Matteson is having a blowout sale to close its doors and liquidate its inventory. The store, which is closing in a little more than two weeks, is putting its entire supply of houseware items—including cookware, dishware, cutlery, candles, décor, brooms, mops and more—on sale June 12. The sale will take place at the former Good as New Thrift Store, 4343 W. Lincoln Highway. The Cherry Creek Plaza is home to several businesses that serve the Homewood-Flossmoor community, from Starbucks to Panera and several local shops as well. However, there's plenty of open space in the plaza, waiting for the right business to come along and call it home. U.S. Cellular to Shut Homewood Store

The closures are tied to the company's decision to sell its Midwestern markets to Sprint Nextel. U.S. Cell customers will need to switch phones to keep their service.

The U.S. Cellular retail store in Homewood will close by the end of May as part of the company's $480 million sale of its Midwestern markets to Sprint Nextel, according to Southlandsavvy.com. The local store is at 17741 S Halsted St. Other store closure locations include Country Club Hills, Countryside, Crestwood, Oak Lawn, Chicago, Lansing, Joliet, Olympia Fields, Evergreen Park, Matteson and Orland Park. All told, the company will close nearly 70 outlets in Illinois and Indiana in a process that will start May 17 and could be completed in about two weeks, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune. Bankruptcy Could Force Closure of Local Applebee's Restaurants

The owners of 33 Applebee's locations in the Chicago-land area, AppleIllinois, have filed for bankruptcy. The business could close or sell all or some of its restaurants in the coming months.

AppleIllinois, the owner of 33 Applebee's franchise locations across the Chicago-land area, filed for bankruptcy last month, could lead the closure of several of the locations, while 15 others might be sold to another RHM Illinois, according to a Sun-Times Media Report. AppleIllinois currently owns local Applebee's in Homewood, Mokena, Joliet, Evergreen Park, Tinley Park and other local towns. Court filings by AppleIllinois list the company's assets between $1 to $10 million, with liabilities listed at the same numbers. In the filings, which were released Tuesday, May 7, the company listed 1,700 jobs it could eliminate at its restaurants by late June.
