Homewood-Flossmoor girls basketball standout Charnelle Reed has verbally committed to Western Illinois University. Reed chose Western after also considering Wright State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in her final three choices. Earlier in her recruitment, Illinois-Chicago and Eastern Michigan were considered, and Reed also had offers from the University of Southern Indiana and Missouri Western State. The team that came into the season known by some opposing teams as “the math teachers from H-F” can now go by a different name: champions. After dominating the competition the entire season, the Chestnuts claimed the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District Kickball championship. The Chestnuts, with an average age of 15 years older than most of its competition, showed what good communication and teamwork can do as they won 11 of their 12 games on the season and made it look easy. The Chestnuts left most teams feeling as if they bombed a math test in school. Timely hitting and great defense carried …
The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District kickball tournament is down to the final two as both the Chestnuts and Lassen's Assassins advanced to Thursday night's final. Lassen's Assassins, the defending champs, took down Ball Hogs, while the Chestnuts, the tournament's top seed, defeated New Kicks on the Block 6-4. The Chestnuts (10-1) took a commanding lead early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Like he has all summer, pitcher Steven Tobin was in control on the mound and contributed on offense as well. Outside of a two-out rally in the last inning by New Kicks on the Block, …
The Flossmoor Firebirds 12-U baseball team had a successful trip to Cooperstown, N.Y., last week, despite falling short of reaching the finals. The Firebirds went 7-1 on the week, winning most of their games with ease. They won their first seven games by a combined score of 97-19. The Firebirds routed New Castle, N.J., 29-3; they beat Bridgewater, N.J., 9-4; they pounded Fort Caroline, Fla., 16-2; they stomped St. Charles, Ill., 13-2; they hammered Libertyville, Ill., 15-4; they crushed the Colorado Double Diamonds 6-0; and they walloped Fort Caroline, Fla., 14-4. The Firebirds dropped their …
The Homewood-Flossmoor boys basketball team took first place in the 32-team Joliet West Summer Shootout. H-F's performance was all the more impressive considering the Vikings were without one of their starters, Delvon Rencher.  The Vikings defeated state runnerup Warren in the semifinals and Hillcrest in the finals. Rencher took an unofficial visit to St. Louis University. "We set three goals this summer," H-F coach Jim McLaughlin said. "One, be on time, two play hard with an attitute of confidence and desire and, three, to be coachable. There are a lot mistakes in summer basketball we need …

After Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls soccer team upset Sandburg in the Class 3A sectional finals, the Vikings seemed poised to take home some hardware at this weekend's state final four.  But first the Vikings had to travel two hours south to Normal for Tuesday night’s supersectional meeting with Granite City (located just outside of St. Louis). The Vikings played poorly but still had chances to pull out the win, but they eventually fell 3-2 in double overtime. Despite the loss the Vikings, had a great season, finishing with a 21-3 record and led by senior Kelly Lewers with 47 goals. Mixed …
There’s no question that Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls soccer team ranks among the state’s elite. Now the Vikings’ goal is to be the very best. H-F’s 3-0 victory over Sandburg on Friday moved the Vikings into the Elite Eight and Tuesday’s 6 p.m. showdown with Granite City (17-6) in the Normal Supersectional. The Vikings (21-2) got two goals from senior standout Kelly Lewers and one from Ali Farkos to upset top-seeded Sandburg in Friday’s Class 3A Mother McAuley Sectional. It was the Vikings’ latest step in their postseason quest. They won their own regional last Saturday, defeating Mother …
The dream of a state title for Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls water polo team was dashed on Thursday. Last year, H-F defeated state power Fenwick in the state quaterfinals, and the Vikings earned fourth place in state. But on Thursday at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Fenwick got payback by besting the Vikings 10-7 in the state quarterfinals.  The Vikings ended the season with a 29-4 record.  H-F Track and Field Success Several H-F boys track and field members fared well in the Bloom Township Sectional on Thursday. Advancing to next week’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University will be…
The highly anticipated Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional girls track and field meet got under way Thursday, but some events were pushed back to Friday because of thunderstorms. Through Thursday, H-F's LaChrissa Safforld had qualified in the discus and Abieya Ehimwenman had qualified in the long jump (1st place, 18 feet, 8.75 inches). After the completion of Friday's events, H-F won the sectional with a total of 95.3 points, edging Lincoln-Way East (85). Lincoln-Way Central (53) was third. In addition to winning the long jump on Thursday, Ehimwenman on Friday won the triple jump with a personal-…
Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls track and field team took first place at the Southwest Suburban Blue meet held at H-F on Thursday night. Two occurrences came as no surprise to anyone: The weather was miserable—cold and rainy—and the Vikings’ Abieya Ehimwenman was untouchable in the long jump and triple jump, as she has been all season long.  Ehimwenman easily took first in those two events, but she showed that she may be human as she lost two close races—the 100- and 200-meter relays—to fellow area phenom Aaliyah Brown of Lincoln-Way East. Other top performers on the night for the Vikings included…
Homewood-Flossmoor’s girls soccer team has been on a roll all season. After their 4-1 victory over Lincoln-Way East, the Vikings improved to 12-0 overall and 3-0 in the SouthWest Suburban Blue Conference.  Goals by Kelly Lewers, Emma Kay, Haley Hruska and Hope Hruska supplied the offense. With Lewers leading the offensive charge, the Vikings have outscored their first 12 opponents by a 54-2 margin and have recorded 10 shutouts. The Vikings will see their competition increase mightily the rest of the regular season as they travel to Burlington, Iowa, this weekend, host Bolingbrook on Tuesday …
The Homewood-Flossmoor girls track and field team participated in the Lockport Invite on Thursday, and despite taking third place out of 14 teams, coach Rob Assise was not entirely happy. “We have a long way to go. We are not where we need to be right now,” Assise said. “Our throwers and distance runners were good, but our sprinters have a lot of work to do.” As usual, Ohio State recruit Abie Ehimwenman was impressive. Ehimwenman came in first in both the long jump and triple jump, setting a meet record in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 01.25 inches, and beating out teammate Natalie …
Nine is a baseball number. It's also the number of wins in a row for Homewood-Flossmoor, which is off to a red-hot start on the diamond. The Vikings (11-1, 2-0) defeated Stagg 7-3 as Dan Lietz picked up the win. He went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out five. Elon Chamberlain hit a two-run homer to spark the H-F offense. On Wednesday, the Vikings opened up Southwest Suburban Red Conference play with a 7-5 win over Joliet Central. Justin Smith had three RBIs and also picked up the save on the mound. Then, onThursday, the Vikings beat Joliet Central …

Claire Hamilton finished second in No. 2 singles play, while Tara Nye nabbed a top-four (no third-place match) finish in No.1 singles. Then, on Tuesday, the Vikings won at Lincoln-Way North 10-5 as Hamilton won No. 2 singles and she teamed with Jennifer Parker to win No. 4 doubles. On Thursday, the Vikings fell to Lockport 13-2, but Nye won the No. 1 singles match. “We have had a slow start to the season,” H-F coach Tracy Badger said. “We have played a lot of competitive …
