Hi Leslie!
I just spoke with the Village Manager's Office and the rain barrels will be available for purchase. The cost is somewhere between $50 and $75.

I have to say that after going to the "French" farmer's market, I was disappointed to find the same over-priced vendors with poor quality merchandise. The way it was advertised, there was going to be some high quality different vendors. The lady selling cheese, was putting out cheese that was frozen looking. I guess I will be going back to Tinley.

I have always started my farmer's market visits with the cheese booth. With stricter regulations this year they have to bring things pre-packaged vs. Cutting smaller pieces on the spot, but you really do need to give them a try. My favorite is cashew roll and my daughter loves the chipolte cheddar.

My wife went today (June 4th) to the so-called ''French'' market and there were only 4 or 5 vendors, only one selling vegetables at high prices. Buying directly from the producer should mean egal or even lower prices than regular distribution. Labelling that ''French'' or ''Euro'' street market is a joke that could even make a frenchman smile or laugh. Very disapointing indeed. I ll give it another shot on another saturday, but the first impression is not good.

I do know from past experience at the Market, is that it doesn't start "heating up" until July and August when more of the local crops are actually ready to be harvested. I usually don't even bother attending until then.

Shussbar, I am sorry you were disappointed in the market today. For the record, though, there were 10 vendors today selling produce, baked goods, coffee, cheese, kettle corn, toiletries, and flowers, and one Chamber of Commerce exhibitor. It's true, as Lily says, that many local farmers have not started harvesting crops (and with the cold weather in April, we're looking at a later start than normal). Also, a lot of popular items tend to move very early in the morning, so by mid-morning and later the selection isn't as great. I do encourage you to come again, and if there are particular items or vendors that you would like to see, please drop by my stall and let me know. The feedback is very helpful. Kate

Although we weren't there this week, we here at Thomas' Photographic see great potential for this market. The waiting is the hardest part for local produce. The wait is worth it. My wife and I will get all our greens and fruits at the market this year, like we had last year, and feel good about shopping the small guys. I love that I can talk to the growers. I appreciate the time and efforts of growing and then distributing. I prefer to spend my money at the Homewood French Market!

I am missing the vendors from Chicago Hts and Beecher who sold vegetables last year- and wondering if the fruit vendors from Michigan will be returning. I definitely hope that more vendors selling fresh produce, perferably organic, will be added to the market to give it more variety and more competitive pricing. Otherwise, I am happy to come each week to see what people have to offer!

Zeldenrust Farm Market (Chicago Heights) will be bringing their first fresh produce of the season to tomorrow's farmers market -- spinach, radishes, green onions, potatoes & lettuce. Other vendors selling fresh produce: Homewood Kitchen Gardens, Bloomberg Gardens, and KAP farms. We will also have Labriola breads, baked goods, coffee, kettle corn, handmade soaps, jewelry, and other items. Hope to see you there!

Lots going on at the Farmers Market this Saturday! GoodSpeed Cycles is hosting a free bike workshop (8 am to noon) and, thanks to South Sub Music, we'll have live entertainment by Splatt and the Cedar Road Band (10 am to noon). Many thanks to both GoodSpeed Cycles & South Sub Music for their support!
Vendor selections include wine tasting (courtesy of Aged2Perfection) and Etalaya's Exotic Mandel Broit. KAP Farms will be bringing an expanded selection of produce, plus pick up local produce from Zeldenrust Farm Market, Homewood Kitchen Gardens & Bloomberg Gardens. And of course all your regular favorites will be there too!
