Homewood Trustee Anne Colton talks about the importance of intergovernmental cooperation

One of my favorite things about living in Homewood is the depth and breadth of public offerings.  We have a terrific downtown, amazing schools, an awesome library and beautiful parks.  Our streets get plowed quickly and well.  Our neighborhoods are safe.  We have community events, ranging from individual block parties to village-wide festivals.

And all of these services are supported and brought to us by local government – the school districts, the libraries, the parks and the village.  All fueled by taxpayer dollars – all working for you, the resident.

That’s why it’s important for all of the governmental entities to work together.  Since we serve the same people, it makes sense that we share resources, information and vision, to make sure that the people of Homewood get the best services at the best price.  Every time.

Each organization is headed by a board that is comprised of residents.  These residents, our community leaders, should be on each other’s speed-dial – when opportunities to work together come up, we need to join forces and make things happen.  Working in a vacuum – or worse, at cross-purposes – doesn’t benefit anybody.

I consider myself fortunate to have such dedicated, smart people on each board, and I truly appreciate everyone’s willingness to work together.

It’s a big sandbox, and we can all play.  We just have to remember that we’re all working toward the same goal – to make Homewood the best community it can be.  In every way.
