EIU All Student Show: Awards

Art awards totaling more than $18,500 were presented to Eastern Illinois University students at a reception on Sunday, March 2.  The awards program opened the 2014 Undergraduate All-Student Show at EIU’s Tarble Arts Center.

The Best-of-Show went to Erica Young (Danville) for her oil painting “Alopecia,” and she also received the Sarah Wozencraft Cox Two-Dimensional Art Award for her charcoal drawing “Untitled.”  The Bill Heyduck Ceramics Award was given to Earl Douglas Boyce (Charleston) for the painted ceramic sculpture “Skin Deep #4 – Mangrove.”   A copper piece by Kaytlin Mott (Elliott), titled “Ricciolo,” received the Cary Knoop Sculpture Award.  The Bill Hubschmitt Digital Art Award went to Taylor Bainter (Bolingbrook) for the computer animation “Global Wasteful.”

Merit Awards, designated by media, went to: Ceramics - Elliot Lux (Homewood) for “Constellations”; Design - Ryan Arteaga (Bolingbrook), “Mind-Wandering”; Digital Art Merit - Kaytlin Mott, “Playing With Fire”; Drawing - Lauren Hayes (Lisle), “Sonder”; Graphic Design/Printed - Joanna Kuhn (Oconee), “Virtual Fixation”; Graphic Design/Animation - Elizabeth Mahannah (Eureka), “Recycling Video”; Jewelry/Metals - Josh Doniek (St. Joseph), “Relic”; Painting - Marjorie Lair (Mt. Zion), “Self Portrait”; and Printmaking - Garrett Goben (Charleston), “Frankenfly.”

Honorable Mentions were presented to: Jordan Dekker (Homewood) for “Nature’s Finest”; Ashlynn Frey (Highland), “Message in a Jar”; Jade Hanson (Morris), ”Typographical Studies of TKAM”; Meghan Koester (Paris), “As Tomorrow Rusts”; Alexandra Kulikowski (Lake Villa), “Unknown”; Angela Rogers (Channahon), “Self Portrait”; and Marissa Willison (Mattoon), “Life Out of This World.”

These awards were selected by a panel of art professionals who served as the exhibition jurors: graphic designer Brian Garvey, Art Director for the Indiana University Art Museum; ceramist Ian Shelly, Assistant Professor of Art at Western Illinois University; and Melinda Whitmore, who teaches painting and sculpture at Chicago’s Vitruvian Fine Art Studio.

The jurors also selected the art for the exhibition.  Of the 326 entries submitted by 94 students, the jurors chose 78 works by 45 students to make up the exhibition.

Also presented were awards selected by the EIU Art faculty.  Ashley McCausland (Bethany) received the Chairman’s Award, given to a senior who had art selected for the All-Student Show, and the Paul Rand Award for a senior graphic design major.

The department’s oldest award and one of the most distinguished, the Paul Sargent Award, was presented to Jamie Olson (Princeton).  She also received the Graphic Design Major Award. 

Outstanding Senior Awards by program area went to: Art Education - Carol-Lynn Comparetto (Rockford); Art History - Alexandra Beetz (Princeton) and Jenna Linder (Monee); Graphic

Design - Nathin Arthur (Mattoon); Two-Dimensional Art - Garrett Goben; and Three-Dimensional Art - Kaytlin Mott.

Ruth C. Boyd Cook scholarships, selected by the painting faculty, were presented to: Erica Young, Rindy Ricketts (Mason), Angela Rogers, Marjorie Lair, Esraa Odeh (Urbana), Michael Scanlan (Chicago Heights), Kevin Bagley (Decatur), Samantha Gruner (Hampshire), Laurel Kay (Lake In The Hills), Kristen Beneke (Aurora), Garrett Goben, and Mackenzie Butler (Algonquin).

The Irene Couchman Buzzard Scholarship for fine arts/crafts went to graduate students Kirbi Eckerty (Monticello) and Anna Freerksen (Oak Park), and undergraduates, Elliot Lux, Kaytlin Mott, Fiona Finnigan (Lincoln), Earl Douglas Boyce, Miranda Mauk (Danville), Garrett Goben, Jordan Dekker, Erin Smith (St. Joseph), and Laurel Kay.

June Krutza scholarships for studio art majors in sculpture, ceramics and/or metalsmithing were awarded to Earl Douglas Boyce, Miranda Mauk, Fiona Finnigan, and Erin Smith.

Melinda Hegarty Awards, for art history majors, went to Jenna Linder and Alexandra Beetz.  Beetz also received the Miranda Rice Weiss Art History Scholarship.

The Susan Stephens Memorial Award in graphic design went to Ashley Hall (Thomasboro) and Ethan Hahn (Lindenhurst), and the Mark “Atwood” Evans memorial scholarship for a graphic design major from east-central Illinois was presented to Meghan Koester.  Senior Graphic Design major Nathin Arthur was recognized for designing the exhibition announcement card.

Funding for these awards comes from EIU Art alumni and emeriti Art faculty, memorials to honor alumni and faculty, and from the Tarble Arts Center membership donations.

The exhibition continues through March 30 in the Tarble’s main galleries and eGallery.
