Homewood resident Michael Colton, 11, is planning on collecting $4,000 to donate 50 goats to the Phillipines.

“You know, goats are actually a really good asset… you can milk them, they are cheaper than cows because they are smaller and cheaper to transport,” Colton said. “I believe they give pregnant goats (too), so then the goats have young and the cycle goes on and on and on until there is a lot of goats in that town.”

The newly appointed village workers and trustees include: Steven Gutzmer, the newly appointed village firefighter and paramedic; Craig JaBaay, a new utility maintenance worker; and Lisa Purcell and Jay Heiferman, both new village trustees. 

A Homewood man and a Midlothian man stole from a 7-Eleven donation jar dedicated to Japan Disaster Relief, police said. Richard E. Turner, 31, of the 2700 block of Chayes Court in Homewood and Raymond D. Nelson, 22, of the 3200 block of 147th Street in Midlothian, colluded in the theft, according to the report.

The shooting death of an off-duty Cook County correctional officer who lived in Chicago Heights was officially ruled a suicide Wednesday.

William Washington, 40, died Monday of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

It has been quite a turnaround for the Marian Catholic boys volleyball team. After getting off to an 0-5 start under new coach Bob Piekarski, the Spartans now have won 10 of their last 15 matches.

Their latest victim: Nazareth Academy. Marian Catholic swept to a 25-12, 25-12 victory Thursday on its home floor.

“We all played (well)," Jason Kint said. "We passed and ran our plays well."
