5 Great Librarian-Recommended Books: Patch Picks

This week, we are featuring five great librarian-recommended books for National Read Across America Day.

This week's Patch picks are inspired by National Read Across America Day which occurred on March 2 in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday.

What better time to pick up a few books recommended by the fantastic librarians at the Flossmoor Public Library? Head of Youth Services, Margie Wegrzyn recommends these:

My America by Jan Spivey Gilchrist and Ashley Bryan (For All Ages)

“First of a trilogy and nominee for the 2011 Rebecca Caudill Award, 16
year old Katniss's skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes
her younger sister's place in an annual televised survival competition.”

11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass (For Grades 3-5)

“Like in the film Groundhog's Day, Amanda and Leo, having fallen out on their tenth (birthday) and not speaking to each other for the last year, prepare to celebrate their eleventh separately. Peculiar things begin to happen as the day of their birthday begins to repeat itself over and over again.”

Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm (For Grades 3-5)

“In 1935, when her mother gets a job housekeeping for a woman who does not like children, eleven-year-old Turtle is sent to stay with relatives she has never met in far away Key West, Florida. (A) delightful story rich in characters and history!”

Found by Margaret Petersen Haddix (For Grades 4-7)

“Thirteen year old best friends Jonah and Chip, who know that they are
both adopted, begin receiving threatening notes in the mail. As they
investigate they uncover very complicated circumstances surrounding
their adoptions.”
