District 161 Drama; Fishy Fast Food Joints: Feedback Friday

A weekly update to help you keep up with the comments and conversations on H-F Patch and H-F Patch's Facebook.

Our Facebook "likes" continue to climb at breakneck speed. We've already jumped up 38 more since last week. At a time when we were just recently averaging 50 "likes" a month, this is incredible.

We have you to thank, entirely.

Overheard on Facebook

Earlier in the week I had a disappointing fast food experience at a local fast food chain. Wondering if I was the only one who seems like he’s dealing with this all the time, I went to our Facebook page for an informal survey in hopes to get some other opinions on the local fast food scene. The responses varied:

  • Michael Tucker: "... I think more of it comes from the crappy service that they provide. When similar out of town franchises provide better customer service and correct orders, it reflects bad on our restaurants."
  • Chris Schneider: "They don't seem to know the meaning of "Customer Service" at most of them. More then half the time you have to have them fix the order after they give you the wrong food and they usually act bothered to have to fix their mistake."
  • Anita Rogalski Kowalisyn: "I love the White Castle at Halsted and 183rd street. Their morning crew is great, friendly, and generally accurate! That is when I generally go there. Best breakfast sandwich and coffee around!"
  • Tobias Cichon: "The Dunkin' Donuts on 183rd has to be the worst managed DD ever."
  • Karen Kurowski McHugh: "I will attest to the fact that I am completely mystified at how a certain McRestaurant (cough cough Halsted) can screw up a McDouble no ketchup no mustard? I've gotten home with a plain cheeseburger, double cheeseburger only ketchup, double chz burger only mustard, only ketchup and mustard, no cheese or pickles and one time I had a McChicken (yuck) with no lettuce! I clearly state "McDouble, no ketchup no mustard" they get it right on the little screen but not in the little bag!"
  • Kristen Gonzalez Vanderhei: "I'm always excited when I hear we will be getting a new place to eat & then equally disappointed when it opens & the service is so bad. The food at Buffalo Wild wings is excellent as long as you don't mind the 1/2 hour wait to have a server come take your order."
  • Judith McGee: "The McDonald's in Olympia Fields is an excellent fast food restaurant. I think the success (or lack of) depends on the manager."
  • Yoka Ward: "Every time I use the drive through at Wendy's I am impressed. Staff is courteous, friendly and the food is always right and good. Their service is the best so I don't go anywhere else. Go Wendy's!"
  • Laurie Schneider: "I am very disappointed with most of our fast food places. Took my kids to white castle the other night and waited 20 minutes in drive thru. No exaggeration, I checked the receipt time. Finally got to the second window to get our food and they came to the window and told me my total, even though I already paid. Then he asked me to repeat what I ordered and when I told him he looked dumbfounded. He had given my order to the car in front of me. Offered me a drink as a n apology and said they would remake it. Another guy cam to the window shortly after, never seen the drink, apoligized handed me my order and a sorry coupon. Was really mad now because it was now the WRONG order. Finally after 20 minutes total of sitting there and 3 crabby kids we received the right order and then had to hurry and ask for sauces for the rings because there was nothing in the bag and he was slamming the window. Will not be back again!!"
  • Anthony Dauginas: "I can't stand it when a new franchise comes to town and starts to skimp on everything until someone calls HQ and they get their franchise revoked. Then they either close it down, or re-open under a different name... aka Bolzano's was not exactly Giordano's."
  • Kandice Nicole O'Neill: "You buy crap, you get crap."

Heard on Patch

has caused some controversy among our readers. Here's some of what they have to say:

  • "I know these questions are obvious, but if there is a lack of training, why doesn't the district train the teaches that have deficiencies instead moving established teachers? If there is a secret motive of punishment, aren't there hundreds of qualified teachers out there that would love a job if D161 RIF'd the bottom of the barrel? -signed, dad of 2"
  • : "Here is the empirical and pedagocical evidence - Your boss (the school board) has made changes to the way they run the district. You (the employee) are expected to support your boss' decision. This happens in the private sector every day. It's called change that we can believe in."
  • : "I am very happy to see Flossmoor School District 161 moving forward to level the playing field for all children in the district. These changes are overdue, and necessary if we are to ever create an atmosphere where resources, access, technology, diversity, and quality instruction are paramount. This is clearly a step in the right direction as we develop our children for an increasingly global world."
  • : "You have it flipped Hernendo RevolveR, the School Board works for us. When are the Board elections???"
  • : "Inarguably, the status quo is not serving the majority of District 161's constituents, which are its students. I am certain that it goes without saying that the professional development and training of teachers will be an ongoing initiative for the District. This isn't merely a reshuffling of the deck, but rather, it is but one critical component of the strategy for moving the district forward, versus individual schools."
  • : "All staff should be highly qualified and have opportunities to improve via staff development. This action of shuffling staff that use technology does not change the fact that some staff are not using technology. It seems we need to look at how administrators are running schools. I admit, I need to learn more about this topic to understand what is really going on here. Something does not seem right here."
