Homewood Nudges Residents to Step Away from the Screens

"Screen Free Week" is a national initiative to encourage people to set technology aside.

The Village of Homewood is urging families to join millions around the nation to turn off screens and “turn on life.” World of Enrichment in downtown Homewood will offer a free children’s concert on Friday, May 9 and activities to inspire families to read, daydream, explore, enjoy nature, and spend time together instead of TV programming for entertainment.

Family activities include concocting delicious beverages from around the world, art projects from items found around your home, and an exciting Springtime Etymology Exhibit by Bug Man Dan. Dan shares his passion for the often misunderstood world of insects, kids and adults alike will be able to observe, learn from, and interact with insects from around the world.  This will be an awesome, move-at-your-own pace exhibit.

Throughout the evening, families will enjoy a free concert by Sweet Nobody, a talented duo from California that moved to Chicago’s south suburbs and titled their recent album, “Homewood.” They will debut their kindie-acoustic tunes and invite children to play along.

“The Village is encouraging all residents to unplug.  In addition to the library’s special programming alternatives, Monday throughThursday during Screen-Free Week, World of Enrichment’s Family Night Out on Friday will round out your opportunities to succeed,” says Rachael Jones, marketing director for the Village of Homewood.  “A community like Homewood can easily meet this challenge because we already do live life face-to-face and together.  It’s evident in the number of community events we have, attendance at a little league baseball game, or the line for ice cream at Dairy Queen.”

During Screen-Free Week, visit World of Enrichment on Friday, May 9 any time between 6 and 9 p.m.  World of Enrichment is located at 18035 Dixie Highway.  Many area businesses will be open late on Friday, May 9 in support of National Screen-Free Week. Contact Homewood Public Library for evening programming Monday through Thursday during National Screen-Free Week.
