In the Name of the Father, the Tacos and the Rock N' Roll

Learn how a hard-rocking village trustee came to think of combining God, local music and tacos to form Faith Lutheran Church's inaugural "Music Fest Worship Service and Taco Bar."

Whether you’re a churchgoer, a die-hard local music enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates a decent taco, “” is the place you want to be on Saturday.

Anne Colton, who might be recognized by her current role as a Homewood village trustee, is responsible for the interesting concept.

“We have invited a bunch of local bands of various bents—rock, blues, folk, pop, jazz and more—to come play in a service that will celebrate God with secular songs and music,” Colton said. “And afterwards, we are going to head out to the parking lot and enjoy a taco bar dinner and each band will get to play another 30 minutes or so of whatever music they want to play.”

According to Colton, since the service is so heavily predicated on the music, even the sermon will tie in song lyrics.

“The idea is that, while Christian music is a great way to worship, we can say the same things and reach more people if we include secular music as well,” Colton said. “Secular music is less religious, and therefore more spiritually inclusive.”

Colton enlisted the help of musician and local music advocate Steve Ploum to gather the acts. Five bands comprise the current lineup: Cedar Road (Colton’s band), Kenya, Crystal Luster, Slump and a “House Band.”

“I keep waiting for (the church leaders) to throw the bucket of cold water on me, but they haven’t yet,” Colton said.

All are invited to the Saturday, May 14 event, regardless of personal religious affiliations. The church service is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at in Homewood, with festivities and food to follow afterwards in the church’s parking lot.

“It's a free, family-friendly way to hear some cutting edge local artists, and the tacos should be pretty good too,” Colton said. “If it's successful, we may do it again.”
