'It's A Service Thing' Volunteer Group Readies for First Meeting, Dinner

A group of women formerly part of the Chicago Heights Junior Women's Club are forming a new group, called 'It's a Service Thing: Southland Women Committed to Service.' The group's first meeting is on Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m.

Six years ago, the Chicago Heights Junior Women's Club disbanded after more than 100 years of existence. Now, former members of the club have found their way back to each other, and have formed a new group called, '"It's A Service Thing: Southland Women Committed to Service."

The new group will be dedicated to social activities and community service, said organizer Sandy Christofanelli.

“It will be much more lowkey than in the past, but still give us the ability to get together socially and give back to the community,” Christofanelli said.

The new group will kick off with an informational dinner and meeting at Balagio, 17501 Dixie Hwy, Homewood. The dinner will begin at 7 p.m. and will cost $30. The cost of the dinner includes pasta, eggplant Parmesan, salad, focaccia bread and an open bar for three hours.

Attendees of the dinner are asked to RSVP by Thursday, April 4. The cost of the dinner must be paid the night of the dinner and membership dues, which are $50, can also be paid that night as well.

In an email sent out to perspective members, Christofanelli said that the new group will get together five or six times a year for dinner or a social occasion, and complete a service project in the area.

Plans for community service projects for the group include cooking a PADS dinner, making lap blankets for seniors, collecting toiletries for an abused women's shelter, volunteering at Jones Center's White Elephant Sale, and more, according to the email.

“Being a part of this organization is not a huge commitment on your part. You participate in what you can, though we do ask that you get involved in at least one service project a year,” Christofanelli said in the email.
