Metra, Flossmoor to Break Ground on Platform Rehab Project

The project will span from May through the start of 2015.

Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun will join Metra Board Member Don De Graff, Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno and other officials to break ground on the $4 million project to rehabilitate the platforms at the Flossmoor Station along the Metra Electric Line.

What: Groundbreaking for the Flossmoor Station platform project
When: Monday, May 5, at 3 p.m.
Where: Flossmoor Station: Sterling Avenue, south of Flossmoor Road, Flossmoor

The work will be completed in phases and require entrance and stair closures, beginning with the north-end stairs first. The north-end stairs to platform will be temporarily closed to begin demolition on the north-side platform gate house where the ticket vending machines are located. Vending machines will be removed. Crews will widen the platform by removing the walls to accommodate more passengers on the north-end in order for the second phase of work, set to take place on the south-end stairs.

Work on the south-end stairs is scheduled to begin in late May. The north-end platform and stairs will reopen while the south side of the station is under construction. The south stairs will be temporarily closed for the duration of the work, Metra said in a release. Commuters will need to access platform via north-end entrance.

The final phase will start in September, with changes to the north-end stairs and platform. Passengers will need to access the platform by the south stairs.

The project is estimated to be completed by early 2015.
