Quick-Thinking Homewood Resident Honored for Heroic Actions

Homewood's own Barbara Gbur was given the "911 Hero Award" for her life-saving efforts after an incident on April 13. Gbur used CPR to resuscitate a woman who wasn't breathing at a local gas station.

Homewood Fire Chief Bob Grabowski doesn't take handing out the "911 Hero Award" lightly. It's something he's done a rare two or three times in his time with the department.

But Homewood resident Barbara Gbur's quick thinking and courageous actions earned her the recognition.

Gbur and her husband were driving through Homewood, when they heard shouts coming from the Mobil gas station at 183rd and Harwood Avenue.

Gbur spurred into action, jumped out of the car and darted toward a woman who was not breathing.

Gbur began CPR on the woman and was able to resuscitate her before EMS responders arrived. She continued to help treat the woman, even after Homewood firefighters began their efforts.
