Recalled Skippy Peanut Butter Never on Shelves of Homewood Jewel, Walt's

The recently recalled peanut butter was not carried in major Homewood grocery stores, but H-F residents should still take caution.

Unilever Inc., makers of Skippy Peanut Butter, has announced a limited recall of the following products due to potential Salmonella contamination:

  • 16.3-ounce jars of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread
  • 16.3-ounce jars of Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread

, Jewel at 183rd and Kedzie, and on Halsted in Homewood say they never had the potentially contaminated peanut butter on their shelves.

Though no illnesses have been reported yet, according to Unilever, Urgent Care Physician Muhammad Choudry gives this advice in case of potential salmonella infection:

"If (symptoms are) gradual, with just a few loose stools, there is not much to worry about," Choudry said. "If it's a fever with diarrhea and vomiting, you should call urgent care immediately."

Ingesting the contaminated peanut butter may cause serious and potentially fatal infections, especially in the young, frail or elderly, according to a press release from Unilever.

Unilever says it is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to facilitate the recall, and that no other products are affected by the recall.

Illinois is one of 16 states in which the peanut butter is being recalled.

Unilever’s press release states that the potentially contaminated jars contain the following markings:

  • UPCs: 048001006812 and 048001006782 (located on the side of the jar’s label below the bar code)
  • Best-If-Used-By Dates: MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1 and MAY2112LR1 (stamped on the lid of the jar) 

If you have purchased one of the contaminated jars, Unilever suggests to dispose of the jar and do one of the following:

  • If you purchased up to two jars and would like to receive replacement coupons, contact the company at 1-800-453-3432, which is operational 24 hours a day, for instructions and more information about the recall. In addition, a consumer services representative is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM EST.
  • If you purchased more than two jars and would like to receive replacement coupons, please dial 1-866-475-4779 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM EST, to speak to a representative. We may require proof of purchase such as store receipts, photographs of your products, caps and/or labels.
