South Suburban Humane Society to Host Non-Stop Adopt-athon

South Suburban Humane Society wants to place 200 animals in 36 hours—will you stop in?

For seven years the South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS) has had a dream: to host a non-stop multi-hour adoption event. On July 19 and 20, that dream becomes a reality.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 19 and rolling nonstop to Sunday, July 20 at 8 p.m., SSHS will seek to place 200 homeless pets in loving homes. With the partnership of PetSmart Charities and the PetSmart store in Orland Hills (9277 W. 159th St., Orland Hills), a giant circus tent will house pets looking for homes. SSHS has invited area shelters and rescue groups to join them under the tent.

“SSHS has always had the goal for the public to choose adoption first. Even if they don’t adopt from our shelter, we want to help homeless pets in need,” said Emily Klehm, SSHS’ CEO, “We believe that all rescue groups and shelters need to work together to help end pet homelessness so that’s why we are welcoming everyone to participate with us!”

In addition to non-stop pet adoptions, there will be fun family activities including a dunk tank, kids’ moon jump, games, food, and music. All SSHS adoptions of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens will be a greatly reduced $36 adoption donation in honor of the non-stop 36 hours. All policies and procedures will still apply.

“Adoption fees shouldn’t be a barrier for adoption. We want folks to take what they would have spent on the adoption and buy lots of great supplies for their new best friend!” says Klehm.

If you want to help volunteer at the event, SSHS is in need of volunteers. Simply contact the shelter at volunteer@southsuburbanhumane.org For more information about this exciting event, visit the shelter’s website at www.southsuburbanhumane.org.
