Where Have You Gone, Homewood Days?

It's been two years since Homewood Days was canceled, following resident complaints over various issues with the festival. Now, some residents are wondering when, or if, the event will ever come back.

Following the 2011 Homewood Days event, Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce members were tasked with presenting the Homewood city council with plans to return the event to its roots. However, those plans were scrapped when the chamber instead announced the cancellation of the 2012 event and a request of $30,000 to the chamber to plan for the 2013 event, instead.

Now, a full year later, plans are still under wraps, with little—if any—movement on a new Homewood Days event.

“[The chamber] said they were going to sit down and address how people feel,” said Trustee Anne Colton. “At this point, we’re still waiting. The chamber didn’t put it on last year and I don’t think they’re going to put it on this year, I haven’t heard anything in those regards.”

As the board waits for word on plans to reintroduce Homewood Days, Colton said she was hopeful the event could return in the future.

“[The board] would love to get something going, but it has to be something that falls in line with what the residents want,” she said. “And, they were pretty clear on that after the last one.”

In lieu of Homewood Days, Coulton said that there are some 60-plus outdoor events in Homewood for residents to attend, including a farmers market, outdoor concert series and more.

“Between the park district and the village, we have a ton of stuff to do downtown,” she said. “We are attempting to fill that void. One of the things that’s awesome about Homewood is we have these community events.”

Calls to the Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce were not returned.
