Business Profile: Art 4 Soul

Are you looking for a place to bond with your child or girlfriend over art? Dodi Wians of Art 4 Soul tells Patch readers about her studio and boutique and why she supports local and "fair trade" crafters.

Most people feel you're either creative or not. What advice would you give someone who may not have the confidence to try out a workshop?

Everyone can be creative; you don't have to be naturally creative or trained. Being creative is anything you want it to be. Just have a little fun doing it and don’t stress the details (I know you type A'ers are shaking your heads, but it's true!).

For the skilled artists they can apply their techniques to our ready to paint blank bisque (Ceramic).

Many come in and know exactly what they want to do and others feel intimidated or have those little voices saying "you can't do this." I have seen hundreds of people who say they are not creative make the most fantastic pieces. Learning a few techniques and some encouraging assistance is all you need to create a great piece of art.

What might we not know about Art 4 Soul?

We carry items made in the US, Fair Traded, Recycled, GivenBack and, if imported, done so by reputable companies. We now feature "Fair Trade Fridays" where we feature a different Fair Trade company each week.

We also offer parties for many occasions. You can book our studio after hours for only $50 an hour if painting with a minimum of 12 guests. You can book our studio for non-painting events too! We will create a party for your specific needs, just ask (We offer ceramic painting, mosaics, art classes and workshops).

Art 4 Soul is also the home of "Wear I Am." It's a new line of inspirational t-shirts, journals, bags and hats.  The line is designed by me and a friend and it offers strong messaging meant to empower women.

We are now using Facebook, Twitter and our Blog to create a community filled with artistic ideas.

What are your most popular workshops or events?

Our jewelry making classes fill up fast, so we will be adding two  a month starting in August.

Ladies’ Night is the 1st Thursday of every month and we fill up! (Call for reservation: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. and 15% discount on ceramic.) I am starting "Technique Tuesdays" workshops offering different ceramic techniques every Tuesday beggining in late August.

Any upcoming sales or events?

Midnight Madness (yes we will be open until midnight!)!

Huge sale and painting event!  August 12 from 6 p.m. until midnight.  Many shops open late and we will have live music!

On August 10th, the IPO is hosting an event at our shop before their concert!

Where are your favorite places to eat and shop locally?

My top 3 food picks are ,  and .

As for retail, I shop local and at all the small shops like mine whenever I can. Even when I need to go to Target or Home Depot, I do it in Homewood as much as possible.

The more we spend our money in our own town, the more taxes are given to our schools and park districts.  If we support the local businesses, we can keep our community strong and help it grow to be even better!

Who are your favorite local artists?

Anna Celander, Gloria Holman, Carrie Malfeo and Pam Eberlin, to name a few. Did you know we have over 50 local artists in house?
