Meijer Buys 13 Acres of Land from Flossmoor

If all goes according to plan, the shopping giant will break ground on a new store come spring.

Meijer is a big step closer towards construction on a Flossmoor location. During Monday's, Aug. 5 meeting, trustees approved the sale of 13 acres of land to the shopping giant. If all goes well, ground will be broken on the project come spring.

The 13 acres of land sold—at the corner of Crawford Ave. and Vollmer Rd.—came from the 19 acres that the village purchased last year from First Midwest Bank.

“We’re selling 13.8 of those acres to Meijer. Village Manager Bridget Wachtel said. "We’re selling them, not giving them away.”

With the land sale complete, Meijer can begin taking the next steps in the process of dealing with the village, some of which the store already completed.

“They have six months to go through preliminary process, which they’ve done. Then there’s the development process,” Wachtel said. “We expect that to occur this fall. Everything is right on course with what we’ve been expecting. As far as construction, putting a hole in the ground, don’t expect that to happen until spring ...”
