Leave a Suggestion for 'Just Turkey'

Now is your chance to take some ownership within your local business community.

Have you ever been to a local busiess and thought to yourself, “This would be so much better if only …”

Well now’s your chance to speak up.

Welcome to the Patch Suggestion Box, a new feature in which we highlight a specific local business and our readers offer positive, constructive feedback to help them improve. Once suggestions are collected, we’ll be running an “Owner’s Response” piece to address your concerns.

This week’s focus business is Just Turkey at 17947 Halsted Street. Longtime Homewood resident and owner Brian Latman opened the restaurant in April of 2011. According to him, customers rave about their products and service, but lately, business has been painfully slow.

Until this article, I honestly had no idea "Just Turkey" existed. I have 3 suggestions in boosting business and getting your name out in the neighborhood. One would be to organize a grand opening day or week and offer free or minimum priced trial sized food with an order, different trial for different day etc. People love a good offer and chance to try new or different items. If you were to do a grand opening type event I would make sure that it's included in the Homewood News Letter and of course the Patch! Second, support a local sports team or club/organization within the neighborhood. Theres many music, art, theater etc. organizations within Homewood. Third suggestion is to put your store logo on a flag and hang from a pole in front of the store front, providing that would be within Homewood's guidelines; an American Flag above your logo would be very patriotic. Now that I know your there, will stop in some time and check it out, really haven't had turkey other than traditional style. Good Luck!

I recall that there was a grand opening. That was where I was introduced to several menu items. The Turkey burger was/is my favorite. I'm not sure the location is bad, as it is certainly a high traffic area, its just that the restaurant gets lost behind the pumps of the gas station and between the other stores. Maybe after the Halloween shop is done using the dancing turkey for their promotion down the street, you can grab her to do the same for you. At the very least, better signage on the street would help. Maybe try to make yourself known my setting up at one of Homewood's very cool street festivals over the summer. BTW, I'm glad the Patch is doing this. I'd really like to see you and all the HW/Flsmr businesses get some good, constructive feedback so that you can best serve your community. Also, good job Patch community for keeping it constructive.

Just Turkey sponsored my daughter's soccer team, and gave discounts to any kids from the team showing up in uniform! Thanks, JT!

I found some coupons on their website if anyone is going to head over this weekend to support them. I plan to. http://www.originaljustturkey.com/webcoupons.html The turkey burger and the tips are both quite good but admittedly i haven't been there in awhile and like others it just doesn't come to mind when I'm thinking of a place for carryout. Now that I think about it though, it might be because I usually am getting food for my daughter as well and there isn't anything on their menu she will eat unfortunately. They do have turkey corn dogs but she doesn't eat them. Of course that's not the restaurants fault, but maybe if they had a breaded strip or nuggets I could get her to try them. I also like the earlier idea about setting up at the town festivals. It would be a great new option at the fests and allow new people to try the food.

Add a Gargantuan Sized Baked Sweet Potato to your menu, and I'll be there every week. As a matter fact, I'm heading there now for a Turkey Leg.
Homewood Coach October 20, 2012 at 02:49 AM
ate there the other day. Good food, priced-right, needs a better location.
Mike October 21, 2012 at 12:28 PM
Thanks for the article. I'm going to Just Turkey foe Lunch today and getting a sample of everything because It's All Great Stuff. People need to tell their friends about this awesome place. If you have never had it, go check it out. if you aren't sure what you might like, ask for a taste. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Mike October 21, 2012 at 12:29 PM
Delivery might really help get those turkeys to the bellies that need them!

Perhaps a discount on fuel for the car while you wait for the human fuel. Hey, now that's a thought. Order your meal while you get gas from the touch screen at the gas station while you are getting your gas and get a discount on the gas when you place your order. hmmm, and mmmmm.

I eat there once, and the food was great. I asked for nutritional info and they said that it would be coming soon. I checked their website several times in the following months, but I did not find the info and so this place dropped off my radar. The food is great as are the people, but I want to know calories and grams of fat etc. too.
kareesa kimbrough October 21, 2012 at 01:15 PM
Go down on prices create a real dollar menue... Watch how business pick up I would eat it everyday if the prices was right..... But we are living in a world where we can't afford healthy food all the time. It's not really your location its the PRICES. If you trying to make people healthy don't make them go broke trying to people will walk right into McDonald's, Wendys, or hearolds chicken. And order a big bag of grease and be satisfied.
A. Reader October 21, 2012 at 04:07 PM
To Kareesa- I understand that everyone wants a deal, but dollar menus can only really be sustained by practices that are very unhealthy for our planet.

My family eats there a few times a month! We love it and have never had a bad experience there. I do think it's overshadowed by the location and love the idea of the old Arby's space!! Putting more coupon "mailers" out so that people can get deals right in their mailbox might make a difference. Just making sure to let your customers know that you are there from all angles. Coupons would definitely cause us to come in more as it does get pricey for our family of 5...but otherwise, we love the place, the food, the staff and the owners!!
Mary-Jo October 22, 2012 at 02:34 AM
I've not been but a friend said it was delish. Also, all these positive comments make me want to try it. Coupons via mailers or online are always a great strategy for both new people to try the place and for repeat customers to feel valued. Great suggestion on Arby's space! Great idea for this column Patch!
JayP October 22, 2012 at 03:37 PM
I think the prices are in line with others. I got a turkey burger, fries and a drink there the other day and th bill was 7.03. Cheaper than a comparable value meal at any of the fast food chains.
Brian James October 22, 2012 at 08:24 PM
You have fantastic chili, Brian, it has the perfect “heat”, how about adding chili-fries to the menu, put a little grated cheddar on top along with a few sliced jalapenos’ and a dollop of sour cream, it will be an award winner.
Brian Latman October 30, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Thanks Chris! I can see a positive impact on the business just in this short span of time. Thanks again!
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:00 AM
Bob, Thanks for the great ideas. Coupons are already finished and starting to go out. Email signups are at the restaurant and I have constant contacts and will be sending email blasts to those who want it. Thanks again for the great advice. Please stop by the restaurant for a free meal.
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:02 AM
John, Thanks for the suggestion. Living Social was a success. I just approved a punch card for our brand new customer loyalty program thanks to you. Should be out in less than 2 weeks. Enjoy a free meal on me.

Chuck, Thank you for your comment. I checked on the Arby's location but I just can't afford it now plus it is in a flood zone. I am stuck in the current location so I have to make the best of it. Appreciate the comment. Have a great night!
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:07 AM
Thank you Ladydemo! I sponsored a soccer team and I am going to sponsor a Homewood Baseball/Softball team for 2013. I am looking into doing a anniversary type event in the near future. I spoke to Praire State about some organizations and will be working with them shortly. I have to check with owner of the complex about the flag but a great idea. Thanks again for taking the time to help me. Come enjoy a free meal at Just Turkey Homewood on ME!!!
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:09 AM
Thanks Nate. My kids were skeptic about trying turkey in first place. I didn't tell them at first and they couldn't tell the difference. I can't change the menu do to some restrictions but I will see about turkey nuggets or stips if they are out on the market. Come enjoy a free meal on ME!
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:10 AM
Mike, Thanks for all your suggestions. You are awesome as usual. I believe you come in 5 days a week. Enjoy your next meal on ME!
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:12 AM
Sarah, Thank you for your comment. I have been asking corporate for nutritional info on the products. Unfortunately, it is not in there budget as of yet. Once we have 30 stores it will be mandated. I apologize for not having this info. I know it would attract more business. I briefly looked into the price and I was astounded how much it cost to have someone do it for you.
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:15 AM
Kareesa, I thank you for your comment. We have a mini taco for $1 and have created $5 specials during lunch...ie. polish, fry and drink, link, fry and drink, mini tip, salad. If you divide the polish, fry and drink it is $1.66 each..same for link, fry and drink. Unfortunately, turkey cost more and the healthier it is the more it is. I am sorry but for now we have those specials. Thanks. Feel free to come in for a free mini taco. Just tell them Brian sent you. :) Thanks again
Brian Latman October 31, 2012 at 12:16 AM
