'Sweet Annie's' New Flossmoor Home a Dream Come True

Sweet Annie's might not have been gone long, but the owner was happy to be back up and running in her new location, as of June 11.

If you've been resisting the urge to indulge in sweets, you might have felt your resolve waver Tuesday.

After a brief absence from the Flossmoor business scene, she's back! Sweet Annie's bakery owner Anne Aboushousha opened the door to her new, larger location at 1050 Sterling Ave. Tuesday, June 11.

"This is a perfect location," said the Flossmoor resident of 19 years.

"We were busting at the seams in the first year or two," Aboushousha said, of her need to find a bigger spot. "I always wanted to stay in Flossmoor."

Recent struggles with parking and space nearly led Aboushousha to pack up shop and move to Homewood. But the local staple decided to stay in Flossmoor, instead—its home since opening five years ago.

She teared up while sipping coffee and watching as young customers stepped up to the counter in the new shop.

"I've known those kids since they were babies. That's why it was important to stay in Flossmoor."

The original location closed on May 30, and the hustle began to move into the new shop, which she shares with business partner Drew Mohon, of Drew's Coffee.

Mohon, a former customer, always dreamed of opening his own coffee bar, she said, so the partnership came naturally once she asked for his help.

"He quit his job the next week," she said.

The aroma of Mohon's coffee fills the shop, and his sense of style adorns it. The quaint tables, slatted chairs and homey atmosphere reflect his vision of a French cafe—all furniture carefully chosen and stored over the years in hopes of his dream coming true.

"I keep asking people to pinch me," Aboushousha said.

Along with a new look and new additions to the menu, they'll open an hour earlier each day, at 6:30 a.m., to accommodate commuters. Sundays will be reserved for special events, including cupcake decorating parties and high teas.

But none of it would have been possible, she said, without the assistance of Flossmoor village staff, like Building and Zoning Coordinator Patty O'Neil.

"Our reopening was a giant love-fest," she said.

"It's a blessing."
