Candidate Forum Held for IL Senatorial District #40

The H-F Area and Park Forest Area LWV, along with the South Cook NCJW, hosted a Candidate Forum Wednesday evening for the candidates in the IL. Senatorial 40th District.

Illinois Sentatorial District #40 candidates Toi Hutchinson (D) and Joseph C. "Tuck" Marshall (R) participated in a Candidate Forum Wednesday evening at the Park Forest Library.  The forum was co-sponsored by the Leagues of Homewood-Flossmoor and Park Forest areas and the South Cook National Council of Jewish Women -- all non-partisan political organizations that do not endorse candidates for public office.  Audience members were greeted by PF-LWV members Theresa Settles and Claire Zaret.

Moderator Peg Boivin (HF-LWV) presented the format and the ground rules to the audience which filled the meeting room of the library.  These ground rules had been agreed to and signed by both candidates prior to the forum.

Written questions, screened for duplication and for clarity by Diane Kessler (NCJW) and Maureen McSherry (HF-LWV) covered a variety of issues.  During the 90-minute forum Mr. Marshall and Senator Hutchinson shared their positions on the third airport, funding for education in Illinois, charter schools, school consolidation, pension reform, Medicaid, sex education in schools, how to address violence in our communities, the rights of the disabled, and Amendment #49 on the Nov. 6 ballot.  The candidate had two minutes to respond to each question.

The evening's forum was planned by Syvia Tillman and Susan Palcek (HF-LWV), Diane Kessler (NCJW), and Judy Lohr (Park Forest LWV).
