HFArea LWV Hosts Annual Meeting

The Annual Dinner Meeting of the Homewood-Flossmoor League of Women Voters was recently held at Ravisloe County Club. GSU President Elaine Maimon was the guest speaker prior to the business meeting.

Forty-four members and guests attended the Homewood-Flossmoor Area League of Women Voters Annual Dinner Meeting which was recently held at the Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood.

Dr. Elaine Maimon, President of Governors State University, was the guest speaker following the dinner.  She spoke of the importance of moving civic engagement to the center of education.  In order to accomplish this mission, GSU has established "Renaissance 2014" with a re-commitment of the university to the community.

GSU will begin admitting freshmen in the fall of 2014. With ten community college partners, a dual-degree program will be offered.  Full-time students at one of these community colleges who complete their program in five semesters -- and achieve an associate degree -- will then go on to GSU to complete their bachelors degree.

GSU offers financial counseling to students, and for those eligible for a Pell Grant, GSU will "top off" the Pell grant and help students to graduate debt-free.  GSU offers an early admission deadline -- November 15.  Many people do not realize that GSU charges the lowest tuition and mandatory fees of all state colleges/universities in Illinois.  Also new to GSU in the fall of 2014 will be Prairie Place, a residence hall for freshmen through graduate students.

Following Dr. Maimon's address, the business meeting was conducted.  Marjorie Armstrong gave the Nominating Committee Report and presented the slate of officers and Board of Directors for 2013-14:  Co-Presidents -- Erin Roeper and Syvia Tillman; Vice-President -- Barbara Hayes; Secretary -- Karen Maurer; Treasurer -- Donna Moore.  Board of Directors:  Ruby Marsh, Maureen McSherry, Susan Palcek, Chris Schmitt, and Margaret Smith.  The Nominating Committee will be chaired by Peg Boivin.  This slate was unanimously elected. A budget for 2013-14 was presented to the membership, as was the 2013-14 Program.
