Homewood-Flossmoor LWV Conducts Education Study

The H-F League has been conducting small group meetings as part of an education study on the Role of the Federal Government in Public Education.

For the past few weeks the League has been conducting an education study on the Role of the Federal Government in Public Education.

Leagues across the nation are participating in this study and consensus process in order to establish an official position on this topic. The League of Women Voters United States (LWVUS) Board of Directors approved the study in October of 2010 and approved the study materials and consensus questions in April of this year. After all Leagues in the country conduct their studies, they will come to a consensus by November, 2011, and send reports to the LWVUS. The LWVUS will then analyze all responses and write the position paper which will state the official position of the LWVUS. Once this has been approved, all local Leagues will then be able to advocate with the LWVUS position on the national issue.

So far, the South Suburban Cluster (composed of Leagues from Homewood-Flossmoor, Park Forest, and Palos-Orland Park) have met to discuss the history of education in this country, common core standards, and funding and equity. Now we are planning two public meetings on these topics for Sept. 17 and Oct. 22, where experts will present relevant information about them. This will be an excellent opportunity for League members AND members of the community to become more informed about these issues which affect all of us. Once these public meetings are completed, the Leagues will hold their consensus meetings where League members will discuss the pros and cons of the issues in order to reach agreement through discussion. Our committee plans to send specific information about the public meetings to Patch as the dates grow closer.
