LWV Cancels 2nd Congressional District Candidate Forum

The March 3, 2012, Candidate Forum for the 2nd Congressional District, sponsored by three suburban Leagues of Women Voters, has been cancelled due to lack of candidate participation.

The Candidate Forum for the 2nd Congressional District scheduled to take place at Lincoln Mall, Matteson, on March 3, 2012, at 1:00 for the Democratic candidates and at 2:45 for the Republican Candidates, is being canceled.  The reason for this cancellation is that only one candidate for each party agreed to participate.  Congressman Jackson's office informed the Leagues on February 15th that he would not participate in the forum, and Mr. Brian Woodworth, one of the Republican candidates, did not respond by our deadline.  Mr. Jackson, Jr., is opposed by former Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson, and Mr. Woodworth is opposed by Mr. James H. Taylor, Sr.

This forum was being sponsored by the Leagues of Women Voters of the Homewood-Flossmoor Area, Park Forest Area, and the Harvey-Riverdale-Dolton Area.  We sincerely appreciate the willingness of Debbie Halvorson and James H. Taylor, Sr., for responding positively, but LWV candidate forum rules do not permit "empty chair" debates.

However, two other forums will take place in the next ten days.  A candidate forum for the 19th State Senate District and 38th State Representative District will be held Friday, February 24, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at the Richton Park Community Center at 4445 Sauk Trail in Richton Park.

The same three Leagues are also sponsoring a Candidate Forum for the 15th State Senate District on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 Dixie Highway in Homewood.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend these forums so that they can meet the candidates, hear discussions of the issues that concern them and their communities, and be educated voters.

Since these candidates running in the March 20, 2012, Primary Election will represent newly districted areas, and many people are not certain in which district they reside, this information can be obtained for persons living in Cook County by logging onto: www.voterinfonet.com, then entering their name and address and selecting "Find My Voting District."

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League does not endorse candidates.
