"Jane Adams" Visits HF-Area LWV Holiday Tea

Dawn DeVries, historian and actress from Crete, recently presented a program at the Homewood-Flossmoor Area League of Women Voters' Holiday Tea in which she portrayed Jane Adams, philanthropist and suffragette.  Ms. DeVries, dressed in a period costume, mesmerized the audience of HF-Area LWV members and their guests as she spoke of her life as Jane Adams, founder of Hull House in Chicago. She presented a biography of Ms. Adams, giving many facts about her life with which the guests were unfamiliar, including the fact that she spent much of her inheritance in establishing one of the first settlement houses in the United States and devoted her life to expanding rights for women.

The hostesses for this Holiday Tea, held in the Flossmoor home of Pat and Bruce Hillstrom, included Dr. Jane Brown of Hazel Crest, Janet Lawrence of Homewood, Joan Strohm of Flossmoor, and Beth Bongard of Olympia Fields. In addition, many members contributed tasty treats for the buffet table.

Continuing their tradition of helping others during the holiday season, LWV members brought donations of children's warm hats, gloves/mittens, and scarves, as well as toys, art supplies, basketballs and footballs as contributions for Respond Now's Christmas Store.

The next meeting of the HF Area LWV will take place on Saturday, January 25, 20114, in the home of Syvia Tillman.  After a 9:30 breakfast, members and their guests will have the opportunity to participate in Program Planning, a discussion of local and LWVUS issues which will shape the League's public policy program in the next year.  This process allows local Leagues to have input into the final positions and priorities for taking action at the local and national levels.  For more information, contact Ms. Tillman at 799-9721 or co-president Erin Roeper at 799-3231.  Interested in joining this League?  See our website:  http://hfarea.il.lwvnet.org.
