October's Title: The Bartender’s Tale by Ivan Doig

Tom Harry and his son Rusty make an odd kind of family. Their life is centered around Tom’s venerable bar The Medicine Lodge--the chief watering hole  in the town of Gros Ventre in northern Montana.  Rusty’s mother abandoned them both years ago, but they have adapted well to their unique lifestyle. Until the summer of 1960, that is, when Rusty turns twelve. Change arrives in the form of Proxy, a dancer Tom knew back when, and her beatnik daughter, Francine.  The novel wonderfully captures how the world becomes bigger and the past becomes more complex in the last moments of childhood.
