Damon Williams at GSU Promise Fest (Stand Up Comedy)

GSU Students Plan to Laugh and Run at the Inaugural Promise Fest

For many, going to college seems like an impossible dream, with tuition costs rising and high unemployment rates. Governors State University, already one of the most affordable quality education options in the state, is taking steps to remove the barriers to academic excellence through innovative approaches and scholarship opportunities. And now the students are getting involved too.

GSU Promise Fest, the first of its kind and a student-produced event, brings comedy star Damon Williams to GSU Center for Performing Arts for a night of laughs on October 4th at 7:00 p.m.

You can also lace up your running or walking shoes for the cause at a 5K Run/Walk scheduled on Saturday, October 5th at 9:00 a.m. at Governors State University. GSU students hope to make this an annual event in support of the GSU Promise Endowment Fund.

The GSU Promise Endowment Fund provides merit and financial need-based scholarships to deserving community college transfer students in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Through GSU's award winning Dual Degree Program, community college transfer students are eligible to lock-in guaranteed tuition rates and receive academic, career, and financial aid advising that keeps them on track to graduate in four years. The GSU Promise helps students attain their educational goals without the burden of overwhelming debt. The promise will supplement student grants and state assisted tuition.

GSU Promise Fest event organizers, students Daniel Ellington, Bianc Mangabhai, Teena Dorn, Nia Robertson, and Jeffrey Wyskiel said, "We chose Damon for the Fest for his consistent support of college students and commitment to education."

Comedian and former "Showtime at the Apollo" host Damon Williams has been featured on BET LIVE, opened for the highly successful Kings of Comedy Tour, headlined the Cedric the Entertainer Comedy Revue, and performed at the Black Comedy Tour, which consists of more than 30 colleges and universities. A crowd favorite on the club comedy circuit, Williams’ material is universal, and there's something for all ages. His starring role in the hit musical comedy tour "Laughin' on the Outside, Cryin' on the Inside" generated standing ovations every performance.
