Parker Wraps Up National French Week

Parker students tasted cheese, made treated, and decorated the school for National French Week!

Last week French students celebrated National French Week, an event put on by the National Association of Teachers of French (AATF).

French students in the 7th and 8th grades made posters with French facts to hang around the school and created a large French flag to hang in the hallway. In addition, students decorated their lockers with “Why I study French” posters. On the afternoon of Thursday, November 10, nearly 60 Parker French students attended French Club Cookie Decorating Contest. Students decorated Eiffel Tower and Fleur de Lit shaped cookies, drank soda, and caught up with friends while putting their decorating skills to work. Parker 8th grader, Daniela Lopez, won the junior high level prize and received a French Week goodie bag.

Also on Thursday Nov. 10, Parker’s 7th grade French students engaged in a lesson on French cheeses in a Smart Board presentation. Following the lesson students had the opportunity to try five French cheeses, including the popular St. Andre and Chevre. Students were eager to try all of the cheeses while listening to authentic French cafe-style music. St. Andre was the most popular by far amongst the 7th graders. Students layered water crackers with apricot and orange jams and finished the bite with a slice of St. Andre. 7th grader Kevin Zhang stated, “This is the best cheese I have ever tasted!”

St. Andre and chevre cheeses as well as authentic French jam were donated by Dunning’s Market in Homewood. The popular Swiss-French cheese, gruyere, as well as two others,  and fresh French baguettes were given to the classes from Mon Ami Gabi, a classic French Bistro, in Oakbrook, Illinois. Finally, no French meal, or even snack, could be complete without a delicious sweet treat. in Flossmoor donated Chocolate Brioche, a chocolate filled buttery pastry, for students to sample at the end of class. Without these contributions Parker’s National French Week cheese tasting could not have happened and their support in this day will not be forgotten by students.
