SD 161's Summer School Underway

The 2012 Flossmoor School District 161 Summer School session is underway. Students in grades K-7 are receiving instruction in both language arts and mathematics for a six week period at Serena Hills Elementary School in Chicago Heights. Students from all five schools across the district are receiving 90-180 minutes of daily instruction, aimed at improving skills for the upcoming school year. Approximately 270 students are enrolled for the 2012 summer program, and are served by a group of 28 teachers and support staff members.

Flossmoor School District 161 is proud to announce its partnership with Pearson, one of the leading textbook publishing companies in the nation on a pilot of the computer program Success Maker. All students taking math will have access to this highly engaging and sophisticated program for at least 60 minutes a week. Success Maker will provide invaluable data for students, teachers, and parents in an effort to highlight and document student growth throughout the summer. In the subject of language arts, the district was fortunate to purchase a new summer reading curriculum with an emphasis on targeted intervention strategies aimed at helping young readers improve in the area of literacy.

Summer School Principal Bruce Nieminski, in his second year of that role, has already seen a change in the excitement level of summer attendees. “Students are looking forward to summer school rather than simply looking at it as a chore. Kids want to be here as evidenced by the level of engagement observed in classroom visits.”
