College Admissions: Make Your Personal Statement Count

With the onset of fall, colleges across the country will soon be inundated with applications from this year's graduating high school seniors. Admissions offices will sift through hundreds or even thousands of applications each, so how can you make sure your application stands out among the multitude of others? The easiest way is to write a convincing personal statement.

The truth is that most college applications look very similar on paper. Test scores, GPA, extracurricular activities, and volunteerism can go a long way to convince admissions offices that you are qualified to attend, but what happens when the number of qualified applicants gets too high? How do admissions officers decide who gets an offer and who gets "wait-listed"-or worse, rejected? Most often, they will look to your personal statement to learn more about who you are and whether or not you'll be a good fit at their college or university. Spending a few extra minutes on perfecting your personal statement might be the difference between an acceptance letter and some bad news.
