Family Literacy Night Brings Books and Families Together

St. Joseph School families "Fall Into Books" at Family Literacy Night.

With temperatures in the 50s, it was a perfect night for preschool through second grade families to gather at St. Joseph School for its “Fall Into Books” Family Literacy Night.

The evening began in the school library where librarian Mrs. Carol Zakaras read the picture book, The Fall of Freddie the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia to students gathered on the reading rug and parents sitting at the tables. Afterwards, the families returned to their individual classrooms to read to each other from a selection of 20 books loaned to the school by the Homewood Library.  Parents and their children were also invited to do an art project together.

“The night was about bringing families together to share a love of reading,” said preschool teacher Mrs. Mariann Reilly. “The students really enjoyed being able to pick out the books to read and all the families had a lot of fun doing the art projects.”
