Loaded Gun Found During Traffic Stop: Homewood Police Blotter

Homewood police reports, April 8-10

TUESDAY, APRIL 10

Rental Car DUI

James Allen, 48, of the 19200 block of Chestnut Drive in Country Club Hills was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), speeding and no valid insurance. Police said Allen failed field sobriety tests but refused a Breathalyzer after stopping his car near 183rd Street and Martin Avenue just before midnight for speeding. Allen was driving a rental car at the time—that was later towed—and was unable to provide proof of his own insurance, according to the report.

Domestic Battery

Daniel Wittenberg, 21, of the 1600 block of Pine Road in Homewood was charged with domestic battery. Police said Wittenberg admitted to spitting in another man’s face and, during the subsequent fight in his home, punching that man several times in the face. The reporting officer noted blood and cuts on both men’s heads.

Drunken Driver Stopped for Following Cop Too Closely

Lawrence Bonner, 47, of the 19700 block of Westphalia Street in Detroit, Mich., was charged with DUI, driving with BAC greater than 0.08, illegal transportation of alcohol and following too closely. Police said Bonner failed field sobriety and breath tests after stopping his car near 165th and Halsted streets around 1 a.m. for following an officer’s squad car “dangerously close.” Two open bottled of beer were found in his car, according to the report.

Possession of More Than 10 Grams

Felton Whitehead, 30, of the 7300 block of Sangamon in Chicago was charged with possession of cannabis and disobeying a stop sign. Police said they found 16.5 grams of marijuana in Whitehead’s car after he blew a stop sign near the Metra station, around 3 a.m.

Assault in Jewel

A man was ticket for disorderly conduct around 4 p.m. for threatening to beat up a Jewel-Osco employee whom asked his wife to pick up the items she had knocked off a shelf. “I told him I was gonna swing on him,” the man would later admit to police, according to the report. Though she didn’t tell the Jewel employee at the time, the woman was pregnant and apparently physically unable to pick the items up, police said.

Loaded Gun Found During Traffic Stop

Javaris Riley, 28, of the 17300 block of Laflin Avenue in East Hazel Crest was charged with unlawful possession of weapon by a felon and failure to signal. Police said they found a loaded handgun in Riley’s car after stopping it near 187th and Halsted streets around 9 p.m. for not using a turn signal onto Halsted.
