SUNDAY, MARCH 4

Gypsy Ruse

An elderly living in the 18700 block of Juhlin Drive told police he had been swindled out of $6,300 in cash and jewelry on the early afternoon of Feb. 28. The report resembles what police have dubbed a “gypsy ruse,” in which one man distracts the homeowner, typically an elderly person on the pretense of yard work, while others sneak into the house. In this case, a man told the homeowner he was a new neighbor whose fence separated their properties. He stayed fifteen minutes, talking with the homeowner, and then left out the backdoor.

It was not until March 3 that the man realized he was missing $800 in cash, several rare coins and gold necklaces and rings, police said. The “new neighbor” was described as Hispanic, heavyset, approximately 5-feet, 9-inches tall.
