A fire broke out in the apartment above in Homewood just before 8 p.m.

According to owner Kelly Garofalo, workers at Grady's started smelling smoke around 7:45 p.m. She said the restaurant was crowded when the fire broke out but nobody is reported injured.

"The managers did a great job getting everybody out," Garofalo said.

While the cause of the fire is still unknown, Garofalo says a roofer was doing repair work to fix a leak earlier in the day.

Flames spotted near the chimney one the south side of the building's roof around 8:15 p.m. were quickly extinguished by firefighters.

The tenant of the apartment, a Grady's bartender, was consciously taken away in a stretcher. According to Garofalo, the woman escaped without physical harm, despite considerable anxiety.

Chief Bob Grabowski said the restaurant portion of the building on the first floor sustained smoke and water damage, but was spared from the flames.

"Investigators are looking at it now," Grabowski said. "We will get things boarded up as soon as they finish up."

More information will be available tomorrow, according to Grabowski.
